Green Chemist Posted February 20, 2010 Hi all my wife and I are thinking of studing Bachelor of Biomolecular Science: Medicinal Chemistry specialisation at Griffith Uni. We were wondering what kind of career paths it would open and what would be other areas of study that would complement and enhance this degree? Alice Posted February 21, 2010 Hi all my wife and I are thinking of studing Bachelor of Biomolecular Science: Medicinal Chemistry specialisation at Griffith Uni. We were wondering what kind of career paths it would open and what would be other areas of study that would complement and enhance this degree? Regard GC In Australia, you are somewhat limited to a research position at university, or veterinary medicine at a few private companies scattered around the place. The majority of big pharma research is offshore. In fact I can't think of one (private pharmaceutical company) off the top of my head that specialises in human medicine in Australia. But I can think of lots of Australian universities that get superb funding and are doing some very cutting edge stuff. We lead the world in many areas of science. So it depends what you want to do? If you enjoy synthesis, major in organic chem and go that way. If you just want to know about how all the drugs work and don't care for a lab job, do a pharmacy degree instead. If you have decent colleagues and you or they are good at writing well targeted grant proposals, then university research is very rewarding, a lot more freedom than a private company and less fucking forms to fill in, plus you are more likely to benefit financially through a university if you develop something huge. Secure your IP early on and make sure your name is on that patent. Can't see that happening at Pfizer
Maurice Posted February 21, 2010 You & your wife, need to understand the politics involved, my advice is to obtain a copy of "Green Pharmacy, The History & Evolution of Western Herbal Medicine"/by Barbara Griggs. Then, co-operate to graduate, all the time thinking what your PHD question will be. Find the best professor to supervise your PHd, wherever that may be in the world, and then please come back to Oz, and get on the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) board, to influence change.
