Yawning Man Posted October 16, 2009 If it wasn't for metal, Drum and Bass would easily be my favorite genre of music. Followed closely by Dubstep. A few dnb djs to check would be Spor, Black sun empire..thats all i know. A dude on youtube called Sithxp has many uploads of some awesome dark dnb. Highly recommend you check out his vids Chiral. Mad stuff. cheers
AndyAmine. Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) What kind of DnB are you keen on? Breakbeat, 4-beat, hard step, Jungle, Ragga muffin, ambient, intelligent, old skool, new skool? I used to be into much older stuff (late 80's/early 90's) but as time has gone on its started to sounder cheesier and cheesier and now I much prefer the 4-beat stuff from about the mid 90's period (think from smooth edgy hardcore to pianos and chipmunk vocals), after that the genre started to split into lots of directions but the main style played wasn't very pleasant, a bit aggressive and seeking deeper and longer rumbling bass lines etc not my thing at all. I much prefer happy, cruising, 'flying' music. RIP jungle nights @ 'The Big Bamboo' ;) Im stuck in a time bubble when it comes to music so cant comment on stuff beyond 1999 but some older suggestions would be: DJ Slipmatt DJ Kenny Ken, DJ LTJ Bukem, DJ Randall, DJ Goldie, DJ Seduction DJ Red Alert, DJ SS, (not really my thing but you may like it) Altern-8, SL2 (Slipmatt & Lime) Acen (trip to the moon) Krome & Time, MetalHeadz (Goldie's label) KnightForce records, Moving Shadow Records, Rabbit City Records, Rising high records, Suburban Base records, Strictly Hardcore records, Kickin records, Cyclotron records. If you like Raga style DnB then I cant recommend the 'Hardcore Junglistic Fever' series enough and if your interested in the older breakbeat/hardcore type sounds try the 'Hard leaders' series (preferably the earlier ones) http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/strictl...rdcore/sthccd6/ http://www.rolldabeats.com/label/hardleaders Here are some classic examples of 4-beat breakbeat that iconise the mid 90's period, not to mention some of my all time favorite tunes. Acen - Close Your eyes (Optikconfusion) (1st 1/2 rocks but drifts of into some rather self indulgent hardcore in the 2nd 1/2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-wopJ_jYws SL2 - Fat Controller- In Compleate Darkness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy2CnWMFTXM (Oh god the nostalgia, gives me a huge rush listening to it, shivers down my spine, memories of a small warehouse full of people and smoke, 99% humidity from sweat and lit only by strobe) SL2 - DJ's Take Control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Uflyzqmrbo Acen - Trip to the moon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Uflyzqmrbo Raggamauffin Jungle. Brainkillers - Screwface http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuItahmTIJM Edited October 16, 2009 by AndyAmine.
Chiral Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) Yeah don't like raga at all actually...love the dark shit with evil mono basslines and fucked up evil synth lines etc..have heaps of Bukem, Peshay, Goldie and diesel boy etc..that stuff way to fluffy for me now, and jungle is gone forever I hope...man listened to it for 10 years in the UK and I'm way over it....looking for more nastier unknowns or lesser known, dark style straight up DnB producers...not really a fan of too many vocals either. A mate came around with a heap of dub step the other day and had a listen for about 6 hours to a heap of it...some is ok... some really fucking irritating..the out of synced LFO/envelope filtered basslines and wobbles are cool but there is only so much one can take of it...used to listen to heaps tipper and Si Begg years ago and it's progressed some what from them but meh....I still love my dark DnB and Dark Psy keep em comin lads some of these suggestions so far are pretty kool...particularly Dom & Roland & Calyx & Teebee Edited October 16, 2009 by Chiral
AndyAmine. Posted October 16, 2009 I know you said you dont like raggamuffin but try listening to Screwface linked above, its pretty dark. Also give 'ACEN - Close Your Eyes' still happy but also a bit dark. SS had some darkish stuff too from memory.
alkatrope Posted October 16, 2009 Try out the Therapy Session CDs for some extra hard shit. I really like volume 5, a bit less crazy hard than some of the others I guess but still solid.
indigo264nm Posted October 17, 2009 I second Alkatropes recommendations of Paranoize, Gappeq and (early) Kindzadza... and I'll add Hefty Output, Pondscum, Silent Horror and Baphomet Engine to the list.

Plantsoma Posted October 18, 2009 For dark psy you can't go past the old stuff (2000-2005). Penta, Menog, Parasense. Gataka is also great for an uplift. Being a metal guitarist i am really fussy/picky with what psytrance i listen to. It is mostly electro rubbish with the artists having no fucking idea about how to write a song properly. So when i hear a really well written track or an artist that can write and understand music theory it blows me away. All the dark psy i've tried listening to for the past few years has been noisy crap, so i'd love some suggestions too.
AndyAmine. Posted October 18, 2009 Hey Plantsoma although they arent DnB producers, if you like really well made electronic music you cant go past Cosmic Baby or Oliver Lieb, they are both mainly make trance. The former is a classically trained pianist and his music reflects that, it can be a bit feminine at times so is mostly what I would call MDx music. IMO his best work was the 'Stellar Supreme' album. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_Baby The second it has been said, has one of the most complicated and well stocked music studios in the industry and he makes good use of it. IMO his best release was the LSG album and its some of the best 'cid music around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Lieb I know I have plugged these 2 guys a few times on here but hot damn they are good.
