wahunter Posted August 27, 2011 Regarding temps, they seem to be more prolific after a substantial amount of rain followed by cooler nights, 4-7 deg. First 2 finds were after two days of rain followed by cold nights and clear sky days. When hunting it seemed that they were much more likely to grow in open areas receiving plenty of sunlight rather than shaded damp swampland. @ Mud, when they were consumed fresh it was very similar to a strong dose of gold caps, unfortunately they are the only 2 types I have had any experience with. Might I add, I do not recommend eating them freshly blended (Possibly the worst thing I have ever tasted),they could make those with a weak stomach quite ill. Tonight will be trialing 10grams dried and blended gymp brewed in tea.
mud Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Somehow mush cultivation comes across much harder than it oughta. Anything woodlover is EASY. 'Bleach' some wood chips, or stand in boiling water.. then blend up some old shroom and mix through. You'll easily get a lil myc happening somewhere, and even if it does contam before fully colonised, just transfer the healthy stuff till it works. sidewayschef Posted April 30, 2012 nice, I have heaps of suitable banksia to Chip up. Lost a picture I had of last years failed crop. Somehow the container and the mycelium survived the summer and will hopefully bear some fruit soon. Only seen a few Gyms in Balingup......unfortunately no subs to be found in my trusty patch yet though Still seems to be a tad dry in the hills(that was before the weekends downpour though)

chep Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) Hi there! I'm new to the whole mushroom hunting game and I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing haha. However this didn't stop a mate and I from going on our first hunt today near murdoch At first we weren't finding much at all, just little fella's like these (sorry I only had my kinda dodgy phone camera) But we kept searching and enjoying the wetlands and then started finding cooler mushrooms I have no idea what kind of mushrooms these are so I'd love it if someone could enlighten me However I've got a feeling this guy might be a G. Purpuratus, but I'm not entirely sure. Coud anyone help me out with an I.D? Again sorry for the dodgy quality pics, hopefully I'll get some better ones on our next adventure Cheers heaps Edited May 11, 2012 by chep
occidentalis Posted May 10, 2012 Your pics don't seem to have worked. I've been doing some more research on Gymnopilus ID; hopefully I will be able to scan and upload some of the papers I have been reading. Bottom line: these mushrooms are HARD to identify. Basically impossible without a microscope; even then, very difficult as the features are extremely indistinct, and there are many similarities in the microstructures both between Gymnopilus species and across genera (including many similarities in the smaller Gym species with Galerina - if you don't know what that means, do more research before you eat anything). Although it is probably unlikely that the interesting Gyms will be confused with Galerinas, I think it's important to sound a note of caution and suggest people are very tentative with their IDs. These are not mushrooms that you can simply look up photos or drawings of and identify to species level based on the fact that you think it looks similar. There are also a number of undescribed species from the SW that only have phrase names at this point. I plan to do a small research project on this group this winter, so hopefully I will be able to sort out a little bit of the taxonomy of the active species. I went for a quick walk in my local spot last weekend and found some babies coming up, on Banksia and Eucalyptus logs.
Bush Turkey Posted May 10, 2012 Bottom line: these mushrooms are HARD to identify. so does bluing play an important role in Id'n??? i mean if there is blueing, it would have to be a Gymnopilus right??? unless it had pores
