Chiral Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) Okay so I have wanted to perform a grow log of some of our beloved Aussie clones and not so beloved standards like PC etc.. there are 20 cactus all placed into 20 pots containing exactly the same soil 1 part Perlite 1 part Vermiculite 1 part dried cured horse manure 1 part coarse river sand all cactus pebble mulched with the same stones from same source. the idea of this log is to basically monitor the growth rates of these cactus over 1 full growing season...I know a lot of you are going to jump up with variations and this and that, but I understand that and this is why it's called V1. there are so many variables within one species genetics I know that..so 30 bridgesii seeds could sown and 30 cactus grow and 3 of them could exhibit faster growth rates than the others etc etc...so..I cant really control that factor so I have just chosen at random... tip cuttings and placed them in a pot alongside others that we like growing...what I'm looking for is growth rates, pupping, flowering, disease resist ability etc. To perform a true grow log I would in essence have to grow all these out and then take 30 cm tip cuttings on the same day and then plant those back out on the same day to give a more precise log and clearer data..that would be grow log V2. Some are not properly ID'd so if anyone wants to confirm or dispute the ID of some of them then please feel free too. I will update with pictures once every month and now that its almost winter I don't expect a lot to happen which is good as they will all take off together when spring comes...autumn and winter is a great time to take cuttings as the tip does not continue to grow which means no etoiliation. oh and I have messed up with the individual pics and had my camera on the wrong mode...I will endeavor to update with clearer shots of each individual shortly..sorry for the fuzziness ...I need my tripod back...grrr. anyways here are the contenders ..place your bets please. Nah its Ipomea Alba...moonflower..it puts out the most amazing white flowers only at night..it's a nice vine..I have about 20 HBWR seedlings that are going to be planted out in the ground as soon as spring comes and they can cover all of one side of my gardens fence and then I can supply myself with seed..hopefully. Not having seen how some of these grow before I'd be having a real guess..but I'll stick my money on the 4 ribbed bridge or the T.Peruvians as they are both from my garden and I watched them grow last year...the slowest I'm anticipating will be Bruce as he was also in my garden last year and was quite slow and grew only about 4 inches all year. Yeah that has crossed my mind but to tell the truth most have already put out some roots..less than a week after I received Yowie it had thrown quite a few roots and when I go around the others they have quite substantial resistance...not to mention the soil used is very hydro like..it is very very free flowing and airy..in fact in summer I figure watering will be daily if not more...fertilizing will be done equally too and I'll decide what to fertilize them with at a later date...so far Nitrosol looks like it might be just right at half dose...oh and all were well calloused over before potting...I've had this project waiting for months while waiting for half off the cuts to callous over... I am watching them very closely and any sign of rot and they will be dealt accordingly or eliminated from the contest... Chiral Posted April 25, 2009 Thanks Jack yeah I have only ever heard good things about miracle grow....in the past I only ever use manure or chicken poo pellets and have used blood and bone before too...this may be the first time I'll try a bottled fert...oh and I might add that all the singular photo's will be redone and measurements of each cactus height will be taken with a ruler...can't believe I forgot to include that... mac Posted April 25, 2009 (edited) I have not had alot of experience growing cacti & what ferts are used, but was pleasantly surprised at how my small scop took off after a good sprinkle of crushed dynamic lifter I also used some on a couple of small lophs i have & after going away for only four days was surprised to see they had grown noticeably fatter & a much deeper darker colour when i got home im unsure if it was the ferts or the cooler nights that resulted in the growth spurt ? The original group shot.. and the same bunch today,..but maybe rearranged a bit.. Roseii when planted in May. and how she looks today in January Psycho0 in may... and psycho0 in January Macrogonus in May.. and macro in January.. Eileen in May.. and Eileen in January.. Peruvian torch in May.. and the same plant again in January. Bruce in May.. and Bruce in January.. Yowie in May.. and Yowie in January.. This plant was unknown but have now considered it to be a straight T. Peruvians..in May. and the same plant again in January. Mike in May.. and Mike in January.. so they have grown a fair bit considering they are in pots, I expect they will grow what they have already grown since May again so they will be double the size by then...we shall see. holymountain Posted January 17, 2010 doing an awesome job there chiral. as far as i know this hasn't been done before so you are making an important contribution to the community. there are so many claims floating around about the various bridgesii clones that its good to see some photographic comparisons of them all. obviously you can never prove which cactus is the best overall as there are too many variations to consider. but this sure helps a lot. plus its awesome to see so many of the rarer strains side by side. you've got a collection most people would (and might) kill for can't wait to see them all in person. peace.
