pinegapcontrol Posted October 15, 2015 i have a question regarding my trays posted previously, theyre going through water pretty quick, i am giving them a decent spray every 2 days and putting the lids back on. theyre still indoors so basically no evaporation from heat. im starting to think i should hold off so that the roots sink a bit deeper, the way it is now i think they are just using the water i spray on top where as i want them to sink their roots through the sand and into the soil below. do i need to find a happy medium between letting them dry out and making them sink deeper roots? in the past i have transplanted seedlings quite early but this time im planning on leaving them in the trays for as long as possible, ie until they have good roots and size or until they outgrow the container which is very likely considering the amount of seed ive squeezed into each tray. when would be the best time to remove the takeaway trays from the indoor setup and put them out under shade cloth? protected from any rains of course. cheers and thanks in advance. Change Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) personally i just take small steps with seedlings ill start by cutting holes in the lid once they are starting to show spines, a week later i the double the holes, another week later ill take off the lid after a month of no lid inside i move them outside to shady covered area for months, i try and introduce 3 inch seedlings to full sun over winter so they have some time to toughen up before the summer arrives.
