T.Preuvianus & T.Bridgesii Hybrid

I recently have received some of the above cacti from a friend who got them off a cactus farmer. I received 2 Cuttings, that are very healthly. I thought they were T.Preuvianus but upon asking my local expert he told me that they are most likely a hybrid of T.B and T.P.

They are a little blue and have massive spikes like bridgesii monstrose. They look more like a T.Preuvianus but not as blue as the true blue. These are beautyful looking cacti that have just rooted themselves in winter after a few weeks of being in perlite.

Does anyone else have this particular cactus? I would like to hear what people have to say about this hybrid?

Are you kidding - its like buying a porno mag and finding out its all articles! I've yet to see the result of a cross between peruvianus and bridgesii (and not sure if its a regular occurance around here) so I'm quite keen to see it (should you have any luck with the pic uploads).

I'd be thinking it is probably just one or the other, but thats based only on the fact that I'm yet to see a bridgeXperuv. Could I ask how large the cuttings are and their origins (whether it was an online seller, local nursery, private collection, etc)? Curiosity killed the cat, but I'm hoping the RSPCA got the bugger because I dont want him coming after me...

Cool pic Teotz, mine look different to your one as it looks just like preuv with hudge spikes that is blue but not true blue. My preuv has little spikes just like the pedro. I will be happy to email you a pic Ace so you can get your cactus porn!

Teotz, if you have the photos of Sharkie's cacti would you mind posting them on his behalf (if possible)? I dont think he'd mind and the rest of us are keen to check them out Cheers

EDIT: I just found a similar thread at The Nook which has pics of a mature Peruvianus X Bridgesii cutting (sourced from SS). The thread starter (Hela) mentioned that a lot of the longer bridgesii spines were missing due to transport but they should be quite long. Very unusual looking plant (as far as spination goes) and looks great!

Well here goes for my first post here...

I really wish my growing season wasn't so short, pretty soon I gotta get them into some cooler digs for a little nap.

I had just got this cut rooted in and already the nights are getting a bit crisp and days are perceivably shorter than

they were a month ago.

Edit: I was miss informed not bridge cross peruvianus. My 2 smaller cuttings seem to be T.kathinanus if thats how you spell it, shruman picked this out and I took them to the botanical gardens and this was confirmed by the proper experts at the BG. My friend told me that they came off the same plant he was wrong.

These are the two peru x bridge hybrids I got.

Hmm, they kind of look more like average peruvianus to me, but with a streak of whatever the cacti in the first pic of this thread through them. Quite knobbly for standard peruvianus, but seem to lack any obvious bridgesii traits. It is quite hard to tell until they get to a mature age/size because the spination/glaucosity can vary greatly between young pups/seedlings and older plants.

I think Hela's (above) look much more bridgeXperu-ish to me (clearly displaying traits of both species), but yours seem much more peruvianoid. Still nice plants and could end up very bridge-ish with age. And if the person who sold/gave them to you has that much experience under his belt then he probably is genuine and the crosses are legit, however he might have accidentally self-pollinated the peruvianus or something. Will be interesting to see how they look in a year or two

Check this photo out Ace and tell me what you think. Is this true blue peruvianus or a cross between peruvianus and something else?

Ok something people need to understand about "True" peruvianus, there is not ONE "True" peruvianus, there's lots of them, and IMHO nobody has found the best one yet!

The Trichocereus genus is best thought of like Dogs, yes dogs... Dogs come in many shapes, sizes and have different colored coats, but can all interbreed. Trichocereus cacti are the same way, and many of them are already hybridized, my original idea for "true" peruvianus was to find the unhybridized "Genesis" peruvianus, I assumed it would be the most potent of cacti and that as other genetics got mixed with the "True" peruvianus, the genetics and potency became diluted.

So you see... there are many, many "true" peruvianus, basically here's my defination of a Trichocereus "True" peruvianus- Any cactus of the Trichocereus genus closely allied to Trichocereus peruvianus and Trichocereus pachanoi which exhibits intense blueing and contains high levels of mescaline.

The unhybridized "Genesis" peruvianus is another story, and nobody can really say what it would look like or how powerful it would be until we actually find one (if we actually find one!). Finding this cactus may be next to impossible as Trichocereus cacti have been moved around and hybridized for 1000s of years, I think the best way would be to simply go to Peru (it's probably the only way!)

Thanks Sharkie I'm leaning towards standard T. peruvianus, however it is still a little difficult to be certain (really need old growth [ideally a few shots of the whole mother plant] to observe mature spination, thickness, colour, etc). At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what the label reads, as long as your happy with your cactus! She certainly is a beauty - so blue!
