Well done Undergrounder

The cold snap of Sydney has well and truly arrived, just waiting for the sky-water to return before taking the camera back out for more pornographic action!

Spice 1 and I went for a hunt today.

Found thesegallery_1298_174_54832.jpg

Are they Gymnopilus junonius?

Also found several patches of massive subs that look like they've been there for weeks:gallery_1298_174_74254.jpg

Look at this stem!gallery_1298_174_61913.jpg

Shame we didn't go for a look at this particular location earlier. But we did see a lot of pins. Most were too small to get a good shot with my camera, but got this shot:gallery_1298_174_3793.jpg

EDIT: Oh yeah. Every time we have been to this spot, we have run across other people looking for shrooms, sometime two other groups of people. This spot is only about an acre size and it is crawling with shroomers. Today we saw some kids that were looking for them but didn't know what to look for so we gave them a few tips on how to distinguish subs from poisonous varieties. Have to do SOMETHING for the community every now and then, eh?

Wow, goes to show what I know, i thougth the luvlies only came out in summer (cubes and subs dont have different seasons do they?)!

This summer past we were seeing kilo's of what i am almost certain were cubes (of course if one was ever to pick them one would use a knife and do it properly as Sina mentioned...not that one would ever pick them) in cow paddocks on mid north coast.

I was told by gnome's that they were very weak though.

I just moved to Syd, so Sina, Underground (Nice find by the way), and any other Sydney sider's, I don't suppose I could get some pointers, without giving away your favourite spots of course, for finding the fungus around these parts, eastern suburbs is where i call home but can travel, just thought blue mountains is a bit far...would well be worth it anyway of course, i would love to go and spend a day or a weekend just admiring the amazing bushland up there, and if some mushrooms were found then all the better, but anyway, any pointers? Where i came from it was as simple as walking into a paddock with cows the day after rain and they were everywhere.

Peace,

Mind

hey Mind yeah cubes and subs are in opposite seasons. Warm weather vs. cold weather mushrooms. There are patches out and about (they'd be old and dry now if they're still around) but after the next dump of decent rain, give anywhere you find a lot of woodchips a go. Parks, train tracks, median strips, dead-ends, your front garden. If you really want to hit pay-dirt, you can cheat and go to the mountains, it's worth it. But even up there you need to look, most of the obvious places are straffed regularly by pickers. Tho If you find a few out of the way patches, you can find heaps.

Yes there are some nice patches of mushrooms up that way. I think that along with looking for the blue staining ones its well worth learning about a few of the edibles... (not that I know much) but saffron milk caps are certainly prolific in the mountains and a hunter is sure to stumble across them sooner or later...

Must say that last night I feasted on milk caps diced and fried in butter with garlic spooned over a very fine ciabata and topped with a smattering of bacon (yep I eat meat) a few leaves of lettuce from the garden a squeeze of lime a dash of balsamic and a sprinkle of sesame seeds :drool2:

far out... oh yeah... back to the subs....

A few pics from yesterday. All three patches I checked were fruiting. I was about a week or so too late too one of them though which had around 200 which were badly decomposed.

I've been hunting around in different spots this year. Mulch piles in urban parks around melbourne. No luck yet though. I have some spots I know but I thought I'd try something different this year. Unfortunately neither me or the subs are breaking any new ground so far...

They are around here but the ground is soooooooooo dry. looks like we aren't going to be getting a whole lot of rain over the winter months. They are however doing their thing in the always wet spots i.e. the south sides of hills, under the cover of bracken etc. I don't feel like it's going to be an outstanding year for the sub in these parts

HaHa, yeah I thought you'd like that one. The one behind it was even more bizzare, trying to grow back towards the ground! Weird thing is though there was one that did the same thing in EXACTLY the same spot in last years first flush.

Where were they, shroomeup?

Suburbs or bush/forest?

alkatrope, The strange ones were in a park in an outer eastern suburb growing from mulch, though it is sort of bushland also.

Thanks undergrounder, that explains that then, i was confused for a bit there.

Spose i will have to keep my eyes open, which i do anyway.

Mountains may prove worthwhile but will just have to wait and see.

Nice find there victorski and shroomeup. Would love to hear how potent the loacal gnomes said they were..

When i said the cow paddock ones the gnomes i know were getting were weak i meant they said they were puttin 1.5-2 kilos in a tea and splitting between 4-5 gnomes with only very mild effect, i.e nothing particularly psychedelic. This struck me as odd given stories i have heard of others gnomes experiences.

Peace,

mind

There's no way in hell those particular gnomes got psychedelic mushrooms. Even the weakest liberty caps or pan subbs would send them into the mental hospital (or the grave) on 2 kilos wet divided by 4-5. They might have been looking for Panaeolus cyanescens(active) but found the similar looking Panaeolus antillarum(inactive). That's assuming they even knew what the fuck they were doing, if they were just stuffing 2 kilos of random mushrooms into a tea they're lucky they're still alive. Silly gnomes.

Anyway local subs are maybe one of, if not the most powerful psychedelic mushrooms in the world. 10grams wet or 1g dry is enough for a solid trip for most people. I don't know how many mushrooms that is, but if you dried them cracker dry, ground them up and stuffed them into '00' size capsules, that would be 2 caps.

Undergrounder i don't mean to offend you, but the gnomes were most certainly finding psychedelic mushrooms, and these were almost certainly cubes. They were blue staining, they werent boletes, the spore print was the right colour and the descriptions matched, as well as looking like pics of cubes available online. They did also have efficacy, just very mild. I thought it very strange, as I said, that the gnomes needed this many, but they did, I have heard many stories of other gnomes ingesting one or two cubes and having a very powerful psychedelic experience, but this simply was not the case for my gnome friends. Strange but true. They were not talking about Pans. And no, they werent putting kilos of random mushrooms into a tea, as i said, they id'd them as cubes, and certainly on the first time they did not use 2 kilos, but rather only a few, realising that they were weak they kept increasing the dose. Of course, tolerance may also come into play, the gnomes were quite disrespectful in that they abused the mushrooms regularly over the summer. But this seemed ok as the experiences were not truly psychedelic, rather mild euphoria and some colour enhancement, perhaps some patterning and slight other mental effect ('head fuck'). The experiences they have described as being greatly enjoyable, and very memorable, but not strongly psychedelic as one might consider an acid trip or true mushroom trip.

Like i said i do not mean to offend by correcting you, I just think it is pertinent for me to point out, in defense of my gnomes, that they did know what they were doing and that they did approach it with due caution, this caution may have slipped after their experience told them the mushrooms were weak, and yes, had they one day stumbled across a batch that were potent, there may have been serious problems, but also when consuming the tea they did so in batches of tea equivalent to 3 or 4 of the mushrooms they put in, and then waited before consuming any more. I understand also that this isn't foolproof but it is still a safety mechanism, they were not complete idiots about the whole thing i guess is the message im trying to get across. Also the gnomes understand that if they happen to find some subs or something else, they wont jump straight in and eat half a kilo's worth, they are more sensible than that.

No offence intended Undergrounder and thanks again for the sub info, any other info you think of on the subject of subs in sydney would be greatly appreciated,

Peace,

mind

that's ok man, no offence taken, yeah it must have been the process that they used or something. Or maybe they had built up a tolerance? From the sounds of your description at the top of the page it sounded like they'd taken 2 wet kilos of any kind of paddock mushroom in a tea and gotten no real 'psychedelic effect'.. but at least colour, euphoria and patterning is something.
