ballzac Posted February 18, 2008 I was helping my Dad move the other day, and found a couple of unfinished artworks that he was going to throw out, so I grabbed them. I thought some people here might like them. It's a shame he never finished them as I feel that it was an interesting direction to go in. I think he just found the process too tedious. As you (hopefully) can see, the Buddha is made up of tiny dots and the other of thin lines.
botanika Posted February 19, 2008 Good artworks, i like them unfinished actually. So many dots need a balance of void.
ThunderIdeal Posted February 19, 2008 the first one is particularly cool, the lines give him a sense of 'radiance' (amplified by his expression of joy) without actually having to draw in radiant etheric looking stuff.
mu! Posted February 19, 2008 Yeah that first one looks really cool. mad props to your dad
ballzac Posted February 19, 2008 Thanks for the comments guys. I actually think the Buddha is better. I don't think the photo does it justice though. It looks kinda grainy. In reality it has quite a glow to it. Here are a couple of his other portraits: Not quite as interesting, but nice portraits none-the-less.
gerbil Posted February 20, 2008 wow your dad is a great artist ballzac, pass along our appreciation wont you :D He captured you really well :D job well done.
ballzac Posted February 20, 2008 Thaks for the praise. I'll definately pass it on, and I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
AndyAmine. Posted February 20, 2008 The top one sort of looks like he has a third eye. Very cool. Just how does he go about it? Is there a name for this style? Is there any that are just started with the outlines etc.?
gerbil Posted February 20, 2008 also is he inspired or has he seen much of alex greys work? The one above your one strikingly reminds me of alexs' work yet completely individual in art style, has a sort of folk feel woven into it with many other elements. ballzac Posted February 20, 2008 Actually I doubt he's ever seen an alex grey. I'm not sure I see a parallel...exept maybe the two in the first post (the busyness of them), but not in the one you mention (a self-portrait by the way).
ballzac Posted February 20, 2008 The top one sort of looks like he has a third eye.Very cool. Just how does he go about it? Is there a name for this style? Is there any that are just started with the outlines etc.? Sorry, wasn't ignoring you, I didn't see your post before. He usually starts off with an outline, and then starts building it up with lines or dots. You can see in the first one he has not completed the final 'pass' in the bottom-right, so you can see how it is developed. I guess the style is a type of pointillism. Incidentally, the buddha is decades old.
ballzac Posted November 15, 2009 I visited my Dad yesterday. The artwork he is currently working on is nearing completion and I decided to take a few photos. Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera, but they photos came out okay on my phone. Here they are. Chiral Posted November 16, 2009 I was looking very closely at this thread last night and was well...blown away man, still trying to work out the technique he uses to create the images, can you elaborate on his tek for the dots, lines and colouring etc...you say it's tedious, I bet it is, but hell it's beautiful. ballzac Posted November 16, 2009 As I said in response to AndyAmine, I think the first one is probably the best one to look at to gain insight into how he does it because of the unfinished part of his face in the bottom right. I honestly don't really understand how he does it. The most astonishing aspect is the precision with which he can create hues and shadows building it up out of dots in that way. I think a lot of it is just experience and intuition. He is in his seventies and has been painting all his life, so he's had plenty of practice. Thanks for the feedback guys. ballzac Posted October 20, 2010 I saw my Dad again today. As usual I forgot to take the camera, so only crappy phone pics again. The Buddha is finally finished. I particularly like this bit. Apparantly he spent forty hours painting it, didn't like it, and painted it out and started again: Here's another portrait of me that he's done. I quite like this one. It's got a certain power to it.
