ballzac Posted December 21, 2007 Any chance of some seeds when they become abundant?? I don't know when they'll be available, but I'm likely to be having a look at that spot from time to time just to get a feel for how the plants and their environment change season to season and to watch them grow. So I'm sure I'll catch them at the right point some time and there'll be ample seed for everyone.

meme Posted August 6, 2008 Is A. obtusifolia a protected species? I.E. no export of seeds? I thought that one of the acacia's was restricted to Australia. I've heard some differing reports about safe harvesting of bark from trees for phytochemical analysis. The older school of wisdom was to strip small strips of bark off the tree, but I've heard that this can lead to infections that threaten the plant, and that only ethical harvesting and replacement of the tree would suffice. ~shameless~ Posted August 6, 2008 Plants don't like being ring barked at all, sometimes they survive if the condidtions are right, but it puts the plant under stress, what you've heard is right and obtuse bark is not to be harvested anyway, its againts the lore
ballzac Posted August 6, 2008 I don't think he's talking about ringbarking. People used to say to take one small vertical strip of bark from each of several trees. Now the consensus seems to be that it is better to kill one tree and remove all bark because otherwise they may all die. It is unnecessary anyway, as in locations where obtuse grows, there is a lot of dead matter strewn all over the place. Meme, there is already a shitfight thread about it, and maybe that should be brought up rather than turning this one into a shitfight too. It is called "a sad sight" I think.
