Torsten makes some good points (althoug sobriquet?... I thought he was gone long ago LOL) about posts-for-posts-sake, whether deliberate or not. There's over 10 members that have a <12month registration that are doling out posts such as oh, I know nothing about this subject, but I speculate that....". This is a fucking piss-off, because there's a very real potential that they will make enough comments on subject "x" that it will be seen by members & visitors as long-term experience, or 'rote'. And to a casual observer who doesn't know the limited scope of a member's comments, might consider it an educated longevitivial instruction manual.

WHilst this is a cool place to air all&sundry, and I would err on the side of the 'victims' in the bullying campaigns that roll out every month or so from the narrow-minded folks, it should be considered that if people are to post about ethneo stuff, that they clarify their experience levels. Obvuiosly reputale members dont need to.

homoGenius are you serious? I feel as though you are probably being facetious, but I can't quite tell. I think genuinely "credentialled" posters, whatever the hell that means, would mostly not give two hoots about whether their post count is displayed or not. If people feel cheated about losing a post then they are losers. Besides, I tend to look at how long a person has been a member rather than how many posts they've made.

well, I have the most posts here and I am not attached to the post counter for my sake. However, I do like it as an admin tool. Especially when members change their names, often it is the post count that gives me some perspective on that member. Will look into options here.

As for content, the way threads used to be was that the reliable asnwer to a question could be found within the first 5 or so posts. Even if the first reply was wrong, it would be quickly corrected, so even a lazy reader would not miss the correct answer. These days you will get the question in the first post, then 2 posts saying "I was wondering about that too", then two posts asking "what an entheogen is", then 1 post giving the wrong answer about what an entheogen is, then 5 posts arguing baout what the correct meaning of entheogen is, then 3 posts about how out of it noob #1 got last weekend, then a post reminding about the orignal question, then 4 posts apologising for the digression [plus one askign what 'digression' means], then an incomprehensible post by WS, followed by an attack from JoP, an interjection from the mod, and finally at the end of the second page [a mere 2 hours later] a comprehensive answer to the original question.

None of the digressions I listed above are straight up disruptive or justify a warning, but cumulative they have the effect of ruining a thread. So, if you are one of the people who 'contribute' to that string of events and you DON'T have the answer to the question, then shut up, start your own thread, or post your contribution AFTER the question has been replied to. if YOU can't self regulate this then maybe I'll have to look into applying post number limits to some members who don't get the message.... but seriously, how immature is this community if we need restrictions like that?

I would like to suggest that WS be banned or start to be given some warnings, I usualy keep out of this stuff but enough is enough.

Now that WS has been outed as a troll he has obviously started to post more and more lurid and perverted cut&pasted content pushing the limit until something is done, personally I would rather it was just nipped in the bud before he has vomited all over the forum.

Currently Apothecary doesn't seem to be around full time to deal with it or doesn't mind it but personally, I would like something to be done.

I use the "New Posts" feature to browse the forums daily so Im constantly subjected to topic lines about incests and bestiality...

OK ladies and gents, clearly there has been a lot of things said about the 'noise' of the forums. No doubt I'd come into that quite a bit - I regularly make a huge amount of posts per day, a good 20+% of which are probably 'noise'. I like the way torsten gave a 'rule of thumb' that if less than 25% of the members around would not care or want to hear about the proposed post, simply dont bother.

I will take that on board.

JoP. Mate, I know you mean well, but a lot of people dont seem to care. Honestly, I think you have made quite a few great contributions around here, and to lose you will be sad. Same goes with WS. Sure, a lot of the stuff he posts seems to be crap, perticularly his ridiculous replies. Doesnt mean to say that he isnt a valued member of the community.

Re: post counts - to be honest, its never made fuck all difference IMO. Sure, when you reach a perticular number, you feel the need to comment, and even celebrate (as I did when I reached 1000). Other than that, they are a good way to tell what a perticular member is like (as does their joining date). To not show that would be fine IMO - perhaps we could remove it from the threads and just keep it in the personal page for each member? This way, it will dramatically drop the whinging about post count inflations and if someone is genuinely interested, they could view the personal page of that member.

This stuff about chemical shaman being the 'mascot' for the forums is a load of shit IMO. Sure, I know little about him, and had never even heard of him until recently (in the last 2-3 months), where he posted a few rather derogitory remarks. I personally got offended by them then, and I have done once again. The guy is a dick IMO - he has some fantastic points at times, but he just goes about explaining his POV in a very abusive way. Perhaps I just need to grow some stones and take it with a grain of salt. Either way, I think the rules aught to be applied for him, just as they are for everyone else.

I'm jumping off my soapbox now. I have taken a lot from this thread, and think it was worthwhile in creating it. Thank you to all (including Chemical Shaman, Torsten and JoP) for opening my eyes to the fact that this is a forum, not a chatroom and that we need to lower the crap-factor. I'll do my best, as should the rest of us 'newbs who just seem to talk shit' I just hope that a few folks are able to enjoy what I post and take my occasional post saying simple things like 'nice pics mate' or 'no, I dont think that would work for X reason' and the rest of it.

Peace guys and gals. I'll keep one hand tied behind my back to lower my bullshit dumping (not having a crack at anyone, I genuinely know I post a lot and probably need to slow down).

Oh, and whoever it was who said there should be more people like GreenDreams - I totally agree. i would love to have that sort of way with words, but unfortunately everyone is different. I know I love the guy (in a completely non-'hows ya father' type way ) and what he has to say

Chemical Shaman is a long-time friend and member of this community. I was disturbed myself when i first came across his foul-mouthed language. It took me some time to realize that sometimes it´s his way to say "i like you". Well, and sometimes it just means what it means because he can get very direct in a very satirical way. He usually says what others don´t have the balls for. He isn´t always right with his rants but I´m glad he´s around and i´ve cried tears of joy reading some of his threads. I know that he just wants the best for this forum. That´s the point where he differs from other less respected persons. bye Eg
