ENtiTY Posted March 13, 2007 Lucky bastard !! Always wanted to go barra fishing. Did some reef fishing off Darwin once, best salt water fishing I have ever done! Prefer lure fishing though. Nothing like strolling up a river/creek taking in the sites Relaxation! Maybe we should organise the next camping trip at teo's hehe
Ace Posted March 13, 2007 I'm gonna be dreaming about Teo and his slippery fish all night now! You got a bloody good haul tho! Was that off shore or lakes/rivers? I'm not much of a fisherman these days so not sure about the barra - I was under the impression they are a river dweller?
teonanacatl Posted March 13, 2007 The barra congregate around the rocks at the bottom of one of the weirs where the fresh meets salt when the river floods, so was fishing off rocks into river.

gerbil Posted March 13, 2007 (edited) That's impressive teo much love for sharing ahh i'm so jealous of you northern folk, but we have our perks down south so all is good I'll definitely be packing a rod If I venture up your way (distant future cause of finance lol) I'd love to cook some wild roo with you Any favourite barra recipes? Thin slices with a thick acidic (asian) curry sauce is drool material Edited March 13, 2007 by gerbil
apothecary Posted March 13, 2007 Wow that's awesome teo, nothing like some fishing for relaxation. You're a regular renaissance man
MORG Posted March 13, 2007 Do you usually handle your catch in your hot chilli boxers? ;) Don't slip with that knife dude. Nice haul, let us know about the cooking and eating!
ramon Posted March 13, 2007 Great fish. was fishing with Dirty Old Man last week and he hooked a 1 metre + shark which eventually broke the line ( which I was happy about as we were fishing from a kayak at the time )
Dirty Old Man Posted March 13, 2007 Great fish.was fishing with Dirty Old Man last week and he hooked a 1 metre + shark which eventually broke the line ( which I was happy about as we were fishing from a kayak at the time ) It was a pretty good day. The shark was great sport on light line. It went like a freight train. I got it up to the kayak a few times and like Ramon said, in hindsight I'm glad it broke free too. It would have been pretty dangerous to have handled it on a kayak 1.5km offshore. Great fish Teo. Would love to catch barra some day.

teonanacatl Posted March 13, 2007 (edited) Do you usually handle your catch in your hot chilli boxers? ;) I fish in them, dont catch any fish otherwise :D also I dont use a knife, i gut scale and fillet with my bare hands !!! As for cooking I normally smoke some and cook the rest in some garlic and chilli, quick simple and yummy. Edited March 13, 2007 by teonanacatl
teonanacatl Posted March 13, 2007 Some more, first pic is one of my lecturers kids with a small fish. Ive been catching 3-4 fish around that size per night on 3.5cm gold lures on 4lb line, the big ones are insane on the small rod and had one bend out the hooks. Next is some tilapia I caught (got 15 the day before) on fly.

I have heard they are good eating but never tried them. Those ones were from a dirty water way so I didnt eat them however if I catch one from the river I will. One of my lecturers loves them and yes they are apparently great eating, big aquaculture fish.

Prophet Posted March 15, 2007 One of my lecturers loves them and yes they are apparently great eating, big aquaculture fish. yeah they are a popular food fish overseas and feed alot of people in Africa etc. They apparently breed and grow very rapidly and are very adaptable. Unfortunately in australia you are not allowed to aquaculture them as they are declared to be a pest. A shame really.
