my garden

Recommended Posts

hey everyone,

I just wanted to share my home with you and to get a little advice on how to make it better!

first i'll show ya around my garden.

post-1334-1166069114_thumb.jpg

this is the first part to my garden which at the back is a huge small tomato plant and behind that is my veggie patch. As you look towards the front you can see the boganvillias in the yellow pots and my hbwr plant that was

quite small a few months back but has grown greatly since i put it into the ground. It is around 2 years old and was origninally from herbalistics. Anyone know when its gonna bloody seed??

post-1334-1166069394_thumb.jpg

this is my second little garden spot which has 2 small hbwr plants, one is in plain view but the other is behind my flowering leonotis leonorus. I planted that little succulent ground cover and was hopping it would actually cover ground and block out the nut grass and other weeds but instead its happy to sit there and not grow :ana:

post-1334-1166069576_thumb.jpg

This is my third little garden patch which has a small caapi up against the fence and a small morning glory seedling which is also against the fence behind the small bird of paradise which refuses to grow also. Infront of the caapi, near the concrete, is a little red khat. On the far end of the photo, near the tree/ shrub thing, you can see a little flourish of pink which is my justicis carnea which flowers are pink and are starting to die off but will be back within a few weeks.

This is my greenhouse which houses my cacti, khat plants, hb plants, yerba mate, psycotrias cartha and viridis, heimia seedlings and a few other fun little things

This is my big tree which provides shade which is well needed here in brissi :worship:

Very nice collection so far Penguin! I suggest a couple nice big Trichs somewhere/anywhere! You cant keep them locked up in the greenhouse forever - they need to be shown off and let grow in the natural environments :) other than that, I cant really help, but best of luck any way :P

im with Ace on this one. Fill it with cacti, all of it, cept for one little path up the middle..................nah, screw the path that would waste space you could be filling with cacti.

Well you've got alot of choices and it really depends on what your budget is.

My suggestion is to keep it as native as possible as these plants are already well adapted to drought conditions. I can't really help you with specific species but planting some more shade trees would be a good idea and then work around any features you might want. These could include some nice sculptures or a pebbled/paved path - maybe Zen inspired with a tropical/ethno/native vibe

The possibilites are endless and only limited by your imagination. Take your time as well as it will pay off in the long run if you end up with something you love that doesn't look like a back yard blitz job.

Check out some garden design books in your local library or book shop for some design ideas.

I'm also told Caboolture markets have cheap plants for sale.

Good luck and I'm so jealous!

hi penguin,

you've got a nice big canvas to work with, so the possibilities are limitless! nice waterfront views btw :)

if you want low maintainance and thriving then puffingfish is spot on with the natives. for a fast result i'd start with acacias, get some obtusifolia and others and grow from seed, cheaper this way plus they prefer to get establish while still small, rather than purchase mature plants and have to transplant. those small seeds will morph into massive wattles in no time!

also see if there is a local nursery or forestry place that specialises in native species that are local to your area. tubestock is cheap, you pay like 1 or 2 bucks for each plant.

screw the path that would waste space you could be filling with cacti

damn right, thats the spirit!

keep us posted, we love updates

Go the cacti! Who needs drought resistant natives? Cacti are the most drought resistant Im sure :P But I'm sure the native wildlife would prefer the natives... I dont think the lophs would perticularly thrive in your area due to the rain fall, though I'm not a local. Probably best to keep them in big terracotta pots that would blend in with the rest of your garden. You could keep them amongst the others until the weather gets too nasty for them, then move the pot to a sheltered location. You can pick up some nice pots just about anywhere and even just plain ones look great around other cacti when dressed with nice pebbles. Just some food for thought :)
