Auxin Posted September 17, 2002 My $0.02... "should a simple acid base [naoh base] extraction suffice" No, both gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate are water soluble.

Auxin Posted September 17, 2002 "so it is completley non soluble in non polar solvents (even when in base form) ?" Pretty much. The 'base' form (sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate aka. NaGHB) is pretty soluble in water, it should be moderatly soluble in alcohol, and is insoluble in the more non-polar solvents (like ether or naphtha). The acid form (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) is very soluble in water, pretty darn soluble in alcohol, probably moderatly soluble in ether, and probably almost insoluble in naphtha, butane, etc. In any case, purifying it out of some sort of plant matter would be pretty hard. theobromos Posted September 21, 2002 A Schefflera has some but not enough to make it worthwhile, without breeding programmes.
