  1. Okie... so, whilst exploring some bush on a mates place, around 20km inland on the far south coast NSW, I came across two very odd-looking acacia... seemed to be a few of them; maybe found 5-10 individual plants for the first and quite common for the second. What sparked my interest in number 1, was the sheer SIZE of the phyllodes: 210 x 60 mm and very leathery. They have the typical A. Obtusifolia resin margin and are thick in a similar way, but just seem almost too large? With ID of A. Obtus saying only up to 23mm wide... The second, similarily have INCREDIBLY long phyllodes... measuring over 300mm for some, but only 20mm wide... Anyway, would love it if someone slightly better at plant ID could offer some suggestions? Cheers, Yp Ps. just realised I should probably add a little more info; inflorescences were cylindrical (although not flowering at this point, seems I missed it by a month or two, as still often dried remnants of the flower stalk). Didn’t have my camera with me, so no photos of the tree itself, but in the case of the first species the growth pattern was very similar to A. Obtusifolia down here - quite sparce, with relatively few phyllodes per branch. In the case of the second, much fuller, taller and generally more vigorous growth.

    Acacia concurrens ?

Not much to be hear about activity of acacia concurrens . Any thoughts ? Not sure on id ? See pics below.
  3. One skill I wish to work on is my ability to identify acacias and so I thought I would take a very breif walk through the bush on the way to a friends house and see if I could ID any of the acacias I found. This is my first ever time at IDing so I could be right off. Most the ones I photographed were ones I thought were active. I am not interested in extracting any of the alkoloids this is purely for ID, plus all the specimens I found were too small to take enough to extract from imo anyway. Specimen 1 - Acacia Floribunda? http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/8431/acacia11.jpg http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/8236/acacia12.jpg I thought this one was acacia floribunda due to the elongated leaves and the 3 veins in the leaves. The last two photos are a close up of a small branch I snapped off. This tree was not flowering as is expected with Floribunda this time of year. Specimen 2 - Acacia ? http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6084/acacia21.jpg http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2554/acacia24.jpg http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3525/acacia23.jpg At first I thought this was Longifolia but I am not so sure after thinking about it. This one is about to flower. One thing that makes me not sure is it looks like it will flower in a ball shape rather than the rod shape which I don't believe Longifolia do. Specimen 3 - Acacia Longifolia? http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1857/acacia31.jpg http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/1117/acacia32.jpg This one I believe maybe longifolia, it has the rod flowering shape (atleast I think it does, remember I am completely new to this). Specimen 4 - Acacia ? http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1444/acacia41.jpg http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6929/acacia42.jpg I believe this is the same acacia as 2 - same flower shape, same phyllode colour and shape. Specimen 5 - Acacia Floribunda? http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/9300/acacia51.jpg http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/383/acacia52.jpg Has 3 main veins and the phyllodes are fairly elongated and not flowering. The phyllodes are a little obtuse so it could be obtusifolia too? Specimen 6 - Acacia Obtusifolia? http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3944/acacia61.jpg http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7059/acacia62.jpg It was the redish colour in the stem which made me think obtusifolia because I have seen an obtusifolia before and it had the same red. Not sure if the red was on the leaves or the stem though. Specimen 7 - Acacia ? http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7215/acacia71.jpg http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/3016/acacia72.jpg I thought perhaps Floribunda but now that I look at the photos and noticed the circlular flowers starting which is not consistent with what I know about Floribunda so now I'm not sure. I had fun looking around in my 15 minute walk in the bush, something I plan on doing more often for longer. Peace.
