    Moving cacti across state boarders.

Howdy Folks. I have done a thorough forum search and could not find anything regarding the circumstances i will be faced with, so i have decided to ask you lot for any advice or legal know how when it comes to moving plants across state boarders by car. In late January 2014 i will be moving from Perth W.A to Mullumbimby in Northern New South Wales, This will be the biggest move of my life so i hope it all goes to plan. I will be driving with a friend through the Nullabor Desert, crossing into South Australia and then from south Australia into New South Wales. I will be taking my friends and my own possessions along on the journey, this includes my cacti collection and various other plants ( Banisteriopsis Caapi, Psychotria ssp, Catha Edulis, Calea Zacatachichi) as well as an assortment of pereskiopsis cacti grafts and my seed collection in a trailer. These are my most prized possessions, and i could not imagine starting my collection of 3 years all over again. the cacti will all be well established rooted specimens in pots. To my understanding there are no laws against any of the genus or species i will be carrying in my trailer in the state of New South Wales, although they are all scheduled in South Australia . From what i have read it seems as though customs aren't as strict on live plant materials coming out of W.A as they are on plant materials coming into W.A. Id love to know whether anybody has done this before and what problems i might run into going through the boarder crossings. Remember i will have a large trailer filled to the brim with plants and cacti, the largest of which measures up at just under two meters with multiple branches. These are my Queries...... Should i contact customs before hand? Do i need to fill out any papers or documentation before i cross? Are there any alternative methods of transferring these plants into another state safely? Most of my cacti were sent over from the Eastern states. Is there a possibility of introducing pests or an invasive species into other states from W.A? and most of all, Is this even possible without and legal repercussions? I have one other option to get my cacti into NSW, but I'm not too keen on it. The friend who is accompanying me on this journey Has a large sound system (8, 18" folded horn subwoofers and an assortment of Funktion-One mids and tops) and assortment of bulky audio gear that he is putting into a hired shipping container and getting sent over to Mullumbimby through a courier company. Even though its a large system, there will still be plenty of room in the shipping container to fit my cacti and other plants. This leaves my babies in the hands of the authorities and customs agents, but the courier company may have a better chance at getting these plants across the boarders than a bunch of dirty hippies driving a 4x4 with a trailer full of cacti. Any information, ideas or comments are most welcome, so please let loose on the comments people! Thanks a bunch friends! Much love

    Moving cacti across state boarders.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think the way to go would be to plant out my parents garden with my rarest cacti and have a big backyard sale before i go. That way i can all ways get cuttings sent over and ill have a fair bit of coin to put towards a new collection. I might even try to take a few pedros over and see how it goes at the boarder crossing. If it works out fine i can just take the rest back over the next time i visit my home town. Thanks once again guys, my mind is now at ease.

    Moving cacti across state boarders.

Thanks for the info Obtuse, I will probably have some plant cuttings taken and sent over straight to Mullumbimby in that case. Driving 110 through the Nullabor in the middle of summer might be a bit stressful on the Caapi and psychotrias. As for the cacti, I am really quite curious as to how strict and well informed the state boarder customs officials would be in regards to the South Australian Controlled Substances act, ( [page 24] http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/R/CONTROLLED%20SUBSTANCES%20(CONTROLLED%20DRUGS%20PRECURSORS%20AND%20PLANTS)%20REGULATIONS%202000/CURRENT/2000.199.UN.PDF )and how well trained they are to identify cacti genus and species. I am prepared to flex my legal rights to their fullest. Here is a broken down version of the Scheduled substances act Posted by mercury35: Cheers.

    WTB Loph seeds and prints

Howdy there peeps. I have recently cloned, rooted and potted up over 20 pereskiopsis cuts ( all over 15cm) so i'm as keen as mustard to start growing some loph varieties for grafting ASAP! I have also recently purchased a heat pad so that i can speed up the growth of the loph seedlings and get them grafted even quicker. So i anybody can help me out with some Loph seeds of any variety i would be very grateful and can offer $$ or trade. Just PM me and i will send you my Current trade list. I have also purchased a microscope ( mainly for viewing algae samples under), but I would also be very interested in viewing some spores through it. So if anybody can help me out with some interesting sub tropical spore prints i would be more than happy to offer $$ or a trade in exchange. So please PM me if you are interested . Thank you for your time friends Peace!

    White spots on cacti.

Hello peeps I seem to have yet another cacti dilemma. I'v noticed a few white splodges on two of my cacti about a week ago and i thought nothing of it. Now about 5 have these splodges. they occur just under the skin and kind of burn a little hole in the cacti flesh after a while. Its not sunburn because i moved a few of these cacti to a shady spot and they are still developing. iv crossed out scale as well simply because it looks nothing like scale. so i'm clueless as to what this could be. Does anybody have any ideas as to what it could be and how to eliminate it? Thanks again SAB peeps!

Thanks for the responses guys. I still have no idea what it could be. I will try some sulfur, but i am worried because the white spots are spreading.

    White spots on cacti.

The brownish orange spots aren't a problem, probably just a bit of bruising. These pedros have been in full sun for about 1 year and they have been growing fine. This summer the temps got up to 45 degrees a few days and they lived through it. These spots only started to appear after it became a bit cooler. It might actually be a bug because a few cacti on the other side of my yard have been displaying this as well and the damage that spidermites and aphids cause kinda looks like the chlorophyll has been sucked out from under the surface. Come to think of it I have seen a few aphids on my caapi vine as of recent, but i wouldn't think aphids like cacti? I might give them a dusting with sulfur and see what happens. Thanks for the troubleshooting guys!

    White spots on cacti.

hrrm possibly. But before this happened these cacti were in full sun all of summer and never showed a sign of sun damage until a few weeks ago. Its also happening to a few cacti that are in full shade. I have a feeling it might be a sort of fungal infection, but i'm still not sure. Thanks for the snappy response Nemisty!

  16. Hello everybody! I seem to be running into a few problems with my cacti seedlings. They are 7 months old and have been doing perfectly fine until about a month ago when i put them outside. They are not in the sun. actually they receive about 4 hours of filtered light daily and the rest of the time they are in full shade. I have taken the lids off the containers that they are situated in and i give them daily sprayings, but by the end of the day the soil is all most dry. I cant seem to figure out whats wrong with them but they are turning purple and red and rotting away. I have tried not watering them for a while, i have tried putting them in full shade and i have tried giving them more sun. To be honest i'm stumped, I have successfully grown cacti from seed and have never ran into these problems before. One observation i have made was that the larger seedlings are not as affected as the smaller ones. So if anybody has any idea of what might be going on, please help a brother out! All answers and questions are welcome! here are a few images of my troubled seedlings: PEACE!

Cacti seedlings turning Purple and dying.

Thanks for the quick response. They really aren't exposed to very much sun at all, but they definately get much more than when they were tucked away in the safety of my room. Do you think that they could recover if i put them in full shade for a few days and mist them moderately? Cheers Evil Genius!

Best option for cacti potting mix

Iv tried a few different soil mixes out and i have come up with one that is far superior to any of the others. I transplanted a rooted 80cm PsychoO into this soil mix in September, and so far it has shot up to 160cm and shot out a 40cm pup that is fat as! Of course I Fertilize it regularly with a 20-20-20 organic liquid fertilizer, water it once a week and it gets full sun for half the day and then full shade for the afternoon Anyhow the soil mix is as follows: 6 parts high grade organic compost (Sifted to take out the larger chunks of bark) 4 parts Regular W.A. dirt as filler (For those who don't know, this stuff is completely deprived of any nutrients, enzymes and it contains next to no minerals. Its basically quartz and limestone...the worst of the worst). If you can get river sand, then that's a big plus. 4 parts coarse perlite. 1 part charcoal and ash from the bottom of my Webber (This helps with drainage and gives the cactus a nice burst of potassium) 1 part Organic Dynamic lifter ( I'm sure any Pelleted organic animal fertilizer will do) Many people disagree with giving cacti high amounts of nitrogen, but i have only had good results as long as i don't over water. Hope this helped. Ill upload some pictures of my cacti collection soon. Peace!
