    what the....?

at first i thought it was just a pup in the middle but now the brain looking growth around the pup made me think maybe it might possibly be a chimera? i know its unlikely but dang its weird. has anyone seen anything like this before? and how common or uncommon are chimeras? the stock is a straight seedling from monstrose trich seed

    Peruvianus or Macro?

the seed may have been collected from a pachnoi, if so it was probably pollinatd by a peruvianus of sorts. pachnoi have very small and very fine spines. they look like what most people would call a peruvianus. how many seeds did u germinate? i dony know anything about macro but im assuming macrogonus is a peruvianus variety..
  5. cant be sure that its 100% peruvianus. it looks alot like one. crosses can look like either parent so it could be a cross. and yeah it will probly start putting out some mature spines this year like this one.

    Yerba Mate lovers thread

i've recently made the change from coffee to mate. its awesome. i didnt like the taste at first but i didnt like coffee at first either. honey is a must for me. i've noticed a metalic taste lately and i think its because my bombilla isn't stainless steel and its oxidising on the inside... so maybe stainless is best the bombilla is actually #93 in the pic

    Keeping Reptiles

ive also heard of scarred snouts on water dragons in small glass inclosures as their fight or flight response is to bolt. for that reason beardys are the best choice here for tanks. also a warning to NZ members, my friend is a reptile breeder here and he got a phone call from a lady saying she had a tuatara living in her tree and he could have a look if he wanted. he was pretty confused because the only tuataras in the area should be in captivity and theyre not known for their arborial skills. he went for a look and it was a mature bearded dragon. he works at a reptile park so luckily caught it and put it in with their ones. theyve got a awesome enclosure about 100m2 with a big palm tree in the middle and hes seen them coming down the tree with what were probably indian myna chicks. thats not so bad , i'm sure no one likes mynas but these guys would be one more predator our native birds dont need. geckos and skinks would probly be tasty snacks too. so if you live in NZ please dont let them go, it would be cool if we had them wild here but not at the price of our birds. if they do escape dont just assume she'll be right. the craziest thing is you dont even nead a permint to have beardys, water dragons and turtles here. theres already heaps of wild turtles here now. not sure if theyre breeding tho.

    What's the better stock??

i'm not so much saying its the girth thats important, more about surface area of stock thats photosynthesising.. if the stock is around 5cm across i leave it around a foot long but if fatter like 10cm i'll cut it around 6". i'm not saying this is a fact either, just what ive noticed in the short time ive been propagating.... the biggest difference in growth i notice is using a newly rooted stock is alot slower than using a well rooted stock, for the first season or so anyway...sorry if im stating the obvious again but someone might find it usefull. and yeah i only wish i had the balls to hack up my big lophs to try grafting them but theyre so damn precious. i'm just using this method for little pups

    What's the better stock??

sorry to go off on a tangent but this might be usefull to someone. ive tryed grafting on fat pachnoi sections with the theory of the bigger the stock the faster the growth and had little success. but now i have alot better success rate by rooting a fat section and letting it pup and grafting onto the pup wen it gets to the right size. i'm probly just stating the obvious for alot of people but i can see a good increase in growth rate when doing this compared to using a skinny pach or myrtl of the same hight. scion in this case is el caespitosa.

    NZ Trichocereus Clones

yeah tink got the seed from her mate down the line which is where that mother is and from the seed she germinated there is massive variation between pach and terschekii, so almost certainly pach X. some look identical to pach but branch at a very young age. theyre very unique cacti.

    id please

yea id love to get my hands on some waeroa's or whatever theyre called...if any1 has some spawn out there.... i did these the same as i do my subs just pot up a plant with some pastureised pine chips through the potting mix and a couple of hand fulls of pine chips at the top with some stem buts and a thin layer of potting mix on top. their myc seems to spread alot slower than subs, so i try keep these away from my subs and pastureise the chips.

First subs of the 2011 season!

Where (other than the shroomery) does this idea of cutting rather than tearing get any credence? eastern europe. i see hoards of eastern europeans hunting for eddibles in the forrest and they each have a small blade in there hand and cut their shrooms free of the myc. my first season i was picking the biggies and leaving the pins for a later date, but the pins werent surviving. after seeing the europeans i gave it a go with some scissors and now almost 100% of the pins i leave mature. not to mention youre removing wood from the mycs habitat one handfull at a time. and tyler the blackberry spray shouldnt affect the shrooms too much as its a foliar spray. i guess there would be a little overspray that may affect the shrooms popping up under the drip line of the blackberry but they wont have blanket sprayed the whole area.

Creating an Outdoor Patch for Woodlovers or Subs

is your mulch fresh? they dont seem to like fresh timber. i'ts best if the mulch is sun bleached, or i think boiling fresh stuff will help get some of the sap out. if the woods ready put down your substrate with some wood ontop (3-5cm) then water and cover with something to keep moisture in like old blankets or hessian sacks. (and now i think of it you could lightly case each layer). keep watering and when the myc reaches the top put another layer of wood on. if you are noticing some competition use smaller layers of mulch. and i pasturise mine. repeat this till all your woods down or autumn is aproaching. obviously the more wood the better too. when you put down your final layer of mulch case it with soil or whatever and grass seed it if you want. the other option is to spread your substrate thru all the mulch, lay it down and case. which will only work if you have alot of substrate. these 2 methods will help stop un wanted mould and fungi competeing with your precious fungi. thats my 2c anyway.

Creating an Outdoor Patch for Woodlovers or Subs

yeah man if you get it started in summer it'll fruit in autumn. with sum watering and good positioning my home patches will fruit months before the wild patches. i'd love to get some dung lovers to try in the off season! but in saying that it was also pretty warm when my first subs were coming thru wich makes me wonder if they really are that dependent on the cold... so i wana try some experimenting in the warmer months. we'll see i guess

Creating an Outdoor Patch for Woodlovers or Subs

small scale can be ok too. my big outdoor bed got destroyed recently but these are from pot plant. i put about two handfulls of pine chips and some myc from 2 varieties of subs in when i planted a catnip plant in here. i just put it under the deck when the times right, the plant slowly dies from lack of light but i just replace it and bring it out in the spring again. 3rd year this has fruited, alot get lost to snails when growing small scale wich is frustrating. i think it could work well for indoor ferns and such..
