i can no longer P.M or view profiles

ahhh, Guess this kind of glitch shouldn't surprise, as I haven't logged in to the forum in over 2 years. Glad to see my account is still active, though.

    Lophophora x Astrophytum

Not to make light of this semi-serious discussion, but I just had to note that I find this sentence absolutely delightful.

How to live a happy life...

Lots of good advice in this thread for keeping one's head pointed in a positive direction. We all have our rainy days. Go ahead and shed a tear when you feel the need, just don't wallow in self pity. Smile even when you're not on top of the world. Do something good for somebody else, it helps to take your mind off your own worries. Don't just do what feels good. Rather, do those things that you'll feel good about having done. Learn to accept the things you can't change, but give your absolute best effort on those that are under your control. Don't sweat the small stuff. (BTW it's all small stuff) Live each day as if it were your last
  7. Not sure if that was intentional dry wit or not, but I got a good chuckle. Hope I can provide a smile to my friends in passing as well as in living.
  8. I hesitate to pursue this RS topic in too much depth in this general macrogonus thread, but ... Kakster's correspondence with me a few years ago indicated that what he labeled as RS0004 was from a batch of plants that consisted of "about 3 different siblings from the same batch of seeds". Of the several RS0004 cuttings I've received from him, there's been only one that varied considerably from the others. This misfit is very similar to the K1 peruvianus clone offered by SS. Compared to the other RS macros, maybe a bit more vibrant glaucous sky-blue skin, slightly broader ribs, and spines that are consistently yellow, never with the red to black tips that are always present on the predominant RS0004 phenotype under my conditions. All the talk about species ID shouldn't be taken as more than it is, IMO. It's most valuable as as a set of descriptors that allow us to communicate effectively. The original description of a species may hold some kind of defining precedent, but it's just a description. Likely less than perfect, and focused on one plant or population under one set of conditions.
  9. Glad to see you back, trucha. I don't get to the forums as often lately, and it seems I have a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for these 'How to' threads, and for stimulating the discussion in general. I have a few photos on disc that I'll try to send you soon. This year's flowers included the RS0004 macrogonus (unusually short floral tube), and that old '242' pachanoid from Knize finally flowered too (very long, thin flower).
  10. The short daylength / higher mesc correlation supports the native tradition of harvesting peyote during the short-day winter months.
  11. Interesting form for sure. My guess would be a bridgesii or huanucoensis hybrid.

    New (genuine?) pachanoi for me

The KK339 seed I've grown produced an amazingly uniform batch of pachanoids. There were a couple of other Knize #s that were obviously all wrong (242-type plants from supposed KK2150 pachanoi seed, for example). A couple of lots were near duds as far as germination goes, too. But I only had two seedlings out of hundreds that were definitely from seed mixed in with the wrong packet. Well worth the $3 per thousand, or whatever it was.

Beautiful as always, Osprey. I'm sure those 339 grafts will soon outpace my seedlings.

Hope I haven't served to add to the confusion. Being from the US, my interpretation of SS was short for "Sacred Succulents". Knowing that the other posters (excluding tonic, methinks) meant "short-spined", adds a bit of a different twist on my interpretation. Very interesting forms either way.

Shruman's pics look very much like the SS02 clone. Passive, yours are quite puzzling. Those pups with short spines could easily pass for one of the SS hybrids involving pachanoi or Juul's. I would have bet money that they were not the same as the long spined plant. I've not seen any bridgesii with the curved radial spines that one seems to show. Any more info on what the supposed parentage of that one might be?
