Meet up: Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle

I'm really hoping to be there, though not to sure at the moment. I need to make arrangements with work, and if thats fine I'll need to organise a ride. If i trained it to the nearest station, is there a chance someone could pick me up?

    stingray shoes, grow your own

Sounds pretty crazy and messed up. Although when you think about it, it's not to different to 'growing' cows for leather shoes. Only difference is the ability to customize the appearance. Either way, it still boils down to choosing comfort and style over life.

    Mushie hunt?

Hey guys, Was wondering if there was any SABers about in the Sydney / Blue mountain / Central coast regions, that would be keen to meet up for a mushie hunt? That said, I don't know exactly where would be the best place to hunt, as I'm quite inexperienced. I don't mind travelling either, though something a little closer to home than Oberon would be awesome. I was fortunate enough to head up to the Oberon sub camp this year, and had an awesome time foraging the pine forests for fungal delights! Found heaps of Saffron Milk Caps, Amanitas, and a few subs. Saw quite a few other species as well, although my Iding skills failed me. Definitely need to invest in a decent NSW based mushie book. Anyone keen?

Meet up: Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle

Cheers Col, you're very generous. Id love to meet more often, though i can't really host a meet at my current residence. Though there are a few nice parks around my area (decent size blocks of land, backing onto bush land) with picnic facilities, if people would be keen on that every once and a while, i wouldn't mind rocking up early and minding a spot, setting up some portable speakers and having a chilled day amongst the trees. Love the idea of a camp as well, perhaps we could organise to make it a more regular or traditional sort of thing. Maybe once per season either at the beginning or end of the season. That could also be a great way to share knowledge on preparing for different seasons. Discussions on what seeds to plant out, or how to over winter certain plants, prepare garden beds, prepare mushroom patches etc. Just a thought anyway. We could also alternate the meets/camps between New Castle / Central Coast and Sydney for a change in scenary and to make it easier for more people to get involved in the community. Unfortunately I can't make the doof, though i've heard good things about previous years if its the silly one im thinking of . Definitely keen for a winter camp though, so how about we start throwing some dates around and get this seed in the ground.

Meet up: Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle

Thanks Col! I had a great time, and as expected your garden blew me away. I can't wait to have my own little slice of paradise one day. Thanks again buddy! It was awesome meeting you guys, and some of the conversations that took place were quite interesting. I was happy to be apart of that day, and likewise, can't wait to do it all again. A big thanks to PH to sending those plants down to share amongst the community, along with everyone else who brought stuff along to share. Definitely keen for a Spring camp!

    Mushie hunt?

Strong point blunt muffin, I hadn't really thought of it like that. Though the focus doesn't have to be on Subs, as I'm sure, well atleast hoping there are plenty other edible or interesting fungi around. Recently a friend of a friend (hmm that statement never sounds like there will be much truth to the story), but anyway, a friend told me that a mate of his saw some bioluminescent mushrooms around "The Gap" in Watsons bay. I knew such mushies existed but I thought they were quite rare, and hadn't contemplated the idea they were chilling in Sydney.

    Mushie hunt?

Cool, definitely need some rain, just thought i'd put the idea out there so we can be hunting on the next flush. As Colhawk suggested there is nothing quite like a good bush adventure. That's what I was thinking as well. It would be great to spend a day out in the bush with mother nature, hunting for some of her magic, and learning about other edibles species. Would also be great to meet and get to know a few more like minded peeps. Amazonian, can I send you my dog for a week or so!?!?! I am serious. I think you've got a solid business opportunity right there!

    Ketogenic diets

Hey Random, I tried a ketosis diet for a while in order to trim up and assist in achieving my fitness goals. It helped me to drop some kilos, however my workouts suffered as a result. I just didn't have the energy I use to have in the gym, and I was losing muscle mass as a result. As such I didn't stay on a ketosis diet for very long. I'm a vegetarian, so I also found it quite challenging to abide by the diet and remain in ketosis without the aid of supplements. One thing I liked about the diet was what a friend and I called The Ketosis Focus. Essentially, once your brain starts running off fat as an energy source you seem to become a lot more alert and switched on. It's almost like you've taken some sort of stimulant. Headaches are a common side effect which occur when your brain is switching fuel sources. As such, you don't want to be yo yoing in and out of ketosis. Anywhere this link will explain things quite a lot better and more in depth than I will, so check it out when you get the chance. It's quite informative and is based on scientific literature: http://josepharcita.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/guide-to-ketosis.html The following link is a sub forum dedicated to ketosis on a body building website. Any questions/answers you can't find in the first link should be dealt with somewhere on the forum. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61 You can also pick up keto sticks at pharmacies, which you pee on and they tell you if there are traces of ketones in your urine/blood stream. This gives you a rough measurement of how high the concentration is; if there are no traces of ketones your not in ketosis and you need to decrease you carbohydrate intake. If its too high your body is quite dehydrated (from my understanding), and you need to up your water intake. Essentially you want to achieve middle ground. I think they cost around $10 for 50 keto sticks. All the best with the diet, hope it works out for you.

    Ketogenic diets

For your body to be in a state of ketosis, you really need to remove as many sugars/carbs as possible, whilst increasing fat consumption. Fat becomes your main energy source on keto diets, so its your main macro (65%), followed by protein (30%), than carbs/sugar (5%). The percentage is that of your daily calorific intake value. Therefore to be in ketosis 65% of your daily calories should be fat. There is a great thread on bodybuilding.com dedicated to keto diets. I'll post a link later for you. Be sure to keep well hydrated whilst in ketosis. The initial weight loss is water weight, as glucogocen stores H2O, and by decreasing glucogocen stores, your decreasing your bodies ability to retain H2O. Which is why hydration is important on keto diets. Should probably get back to work now , I'll post the link later

Thanks Colhawk, It was great to meet everyone and get to know you all. My mrs and I both had a wicked time, and would definitely be keen for the next adventure. Even though the subs weren't out to play, the mushroom hunting was still quite enjoyable. So many species out and about in that forest. Loved the saffron milk caps! Thanks for a great weekend everyone
