    First subs of 2012 season

    please help me identify

Macrolepiota procera are indeed edible. My family considers them to be the king of mushrooms. However, there are a few lookalikes that will kick the shit out of you. Chlorophyllum molybdites is a common lookalike. It has a green spore print and it is poisonous. Be aware that there are also others of the Macrolepiota/lepiota genus that have white spore prints and are deadly. I don't know what you have. I don't know this family very well. Nice finds, though!

    Spore print the first one.

    Wow. Beautiful. What are they?

Without a doubt. But keep looking; they're a good indicator that subs may be about.

    importing mimosa hostilis

All fun and games until some kids goes and orders a tonne of MHRB because the knowledgeable fellow on the internet said it was ok... If we're all about the facts here, perhaps you should suggest how much in legal fees one would have to shell out to take this to the level of being dismissed as an "illegal law" and therefore not applicable to you, me and anyone else who earns less than $1 M a year and can't afford a criminal record.

    importing mimosa hostilis

Hello LadySwan. It's very illegal, no matter what the vendor or anyone else tells you. If caught, you risk gaol time. Don't do it! Have a search around. There are plenty of discussions on this topic, many with the exact same title as yours. Be safe!

    First subs of 2012 season

I just have to boast: yesterday, in a park a mere 10 minutes walk from my house, I found a patch the likes of which I have never seen before. A gigantic clearing under she-oaks and eucalypts that was at least the size of a basketball court, probably more, covered in hundreds upon hundreds of specimens. I tried to photograph the enormity of the situation, but I couldn't do it justice.

Growing conditions for Subs - OBERON, NSW

Too late for the mountains, maybe. Get back to the city. I found the biggest patch I've ever seen yesterday, in suburban Sydney. Probably the size of a basketball court, covered in subs.

    What are your ethnic origins?

Polish born, Australian bred. One arm of my family was probably Jewish from Lwow (now in the Ukraine), while another is thought to go back to Tartar stock (that's my rugged Muslim cowboy side ).

    Under Pine Trees ....

Yeah, it's an Amanita muscaria/Fly agaric. And now that you've touched it you have 4 hours to live.

What weird things do you collect

I've been waiting all day for Colhawk to find this thread. The dude lives in a museum!

    Indoor Oyster Kits

Excellent work, man. Do you know the Milkwood people? Send them a sample and they'll give you a plug, for sure. They have a huge following. In fact, I think our very own Worowa does some cultivation classes with them. The other great thing about this is that it's got Tripsis posting again!

What weird things do you collect

I used to collect portable typewriters when I was a kid. Had an awesome collection but then most of it went every which way when I left home. A few of them remained and now they're bolted to the walls of my shop. I had one beautiful old 40s Egyptian machine with Arabic script. I loved that thing. Damned if I know where it is now Hey niggles, was that you at EGA last year with the spheres? I think I traded you something for a cut of very blue Achuma bridgesii.

I can't wait for Faustus to read this thread. It's going to break his little poi-twirling heart!

How many languages do you speak?

I speak Polish and English fluently, and I can get by in French after a few weeks in a francophone country. Croatian and Ukrainian and Slovakian are so similar to Polish that I understand most of what's said in those languages too.

    Who Do You Work For?

Oh yeah, I forgot to answer the OP: I'm self employed, and I run a little bookshop that is budding out into publishing and other sort of things. (We've just published our first magazine this week!) I work in the shop 2-3 days a week, and my wife also works 2-3 days in the shop. The other days are filled by casual staff. The days that I'm not working in the shop I'm with my kids, running them around to school and art class and to playgrounds and bushwalks and the grocery store and helping with homework and cooking and so on. I love this part of my life. I used to work 7am-6pm, 5 days a week, making pretty good money, doing a pretty banal job in a university. But I missed my eldest son's infancy. And this sucked sooo bad. When we had our second son, I didn't want this to happen again, and we had the good fortune to be able to make the leap to take over the bookshop where we make pretty lousy money but we both get to spend time with the kiddies. It's the perfect arrangement. We both work a little (but not too much), and we both parent a little (but not too much). We're very lucky. Full time work, when it isn't something that fills your soul and heart, sucks big time. Hope I never have to do that again.

    Who Do You Work For?

Sunday June the 3rd, 2012. The day a sweet little hippie forum turned into a rabid AM talkback radio show. Remember the date, ladies and gents. It'll be the date we put on the SAB gravestone.

Black guy on the train talking shrooms tonight

I remember hearing two teens in the grocery store talking about mushrooms once. One of them was telling the other, with an air of definite certainty, that there's actually no such thing as magic mushrooms. "They" put rat poison and battery acid on regular button mushrooms. His friend thought about this for a moment and finally said "Why would they do that?", to which the know-it-all answered: "Because you can't dust for fingerprints on mushrooms which means the cops can't track the dealers down." Kids say the darndest things!

    a few from home

Yeps. The last ones are O. nidiformis and the first ones are some sort of Mycena spp. and the red ones are either Leratiomyces ceres or some sort of Gymnopulus spp.
  24. I love the smell and taste of cannabis, but I can't stand the stone. Not even one bit. This sounds like a great tobacco alternative!
