Hey guys, well despite all my mistakes, just when I was about to throw away the seedling tray I noticed 4 small cacti growing among the mould.. yeah ! I'd better move them somewhere more healthy quick!
-
Thanks to all. Ok I can now see my mistakes: my container was too humid and I planted the seeds too deep. Going to try again with just lightly compacted coarse sand and the seeds sprinkled on top (is that good?). Amazes me though how a plant can survive only on sand.. I think having filtered air inlets would be a good thing to combat mold, as mold prefers stagnant air. will keep you posted!

Hi , I am trying to get my head around growing cacti from seed. I read several techniques on the internet, and some people told me different things.. The result is that I'm really confused ! I am looking for the simplest, foolproof tek possible. I tried the take away container tek, however there is now white mould growing all over the cactus mix.. not good. I nuked it in the microwave maybe not long enough . Several unresolved questions: Do you have to work in super sterile conditions to avoid airborne mould spores ? Can I just use sand instead of potting mix to discourage the mold, but sand has very poor nutritional value? . Do you need air flow , like a small vent with some micropore tape on it. What sort of light is needed and when do you turn it on? Thanks a lot.. hopefully my 4 th attempt will finally pay off !

It was on the south coast . Yeah sure enough the soil had been bulldozed just where they were all growing. Some were also growing along side the road and were scattered a bit everywhere.

I've never really seen Datura in the wild.. until I came across this! Flowers had a nice smell at first and then had a harsh edge.

Thanks guys, patience is key , as always with plants ;)

Hi I've got 2 caapi plants, and they are healthy but they are like normal plants (stem, leaves); they don't seem to form a vine, or try to climb strings and sticks I put for them. Maybe they are too young or my climate is not warm enough ? Bit confused.. Cheers

Best crops for survival gardening
nano replied to nano's topic in Sustainable Technologies & Ethical Living
Thanks guys, I think there is no hope that i can produce all my protein on such a small area (600 m^2 and with the house on it). Other threads mention at least 1 acre (~4000 m^2) to feed a family.. So instead I am going to stock up on lentils and beans (they can be stored up to 30 years if you remove the oxygen). 50kg of these would feed my partner and I for one year. And the garden will be best used for growing fresh veggies and medicine . Nano -
Hi there, I want to do a little experiment: I have a normal sized suburban backyard and I would like to know how many days of the year my partner and I could survive with just eating my own produce. So I am looking for the killer plant that will grow the fastest, takes the least amount of space, and brings the most calories in my plate. So far I thought about: lentils, peanuts, potatoes. And tomatoes and lettuce for vitamins. Maybe some chooks for quick recycling of vegetable into compost and meat for XMas day. Any suggestions ? Thanks Nano ps: I'm just getting ready for 2012 when the shit is going to hit the fan ;)
