  1. loph areola, grafted onto pedro, two small buttons have emerged out of the areolae why just graft one? multiple pups grafted individual crest onto pedro this graft started pupping like crazy not rare, or unusual, but always good to remind people to as well, fast track pedros by means of grafting. a rare ario agavoides x ario hintoni graft a rare ario fissuratus, with Godzilla trait. this button just pups like crazy. this graft shows a button with two growing points. an areola of a precious crest, grafted onto pedro, but what will emerge is probably, only a normal pedro, or just monstrous. seems to me that areola grafting will not re produce a crest. the scion of this graft, was removed from a pedro crest, I hope it will be at least a monstrous form. hoodia gordonii, grafted onto stapelia. tbm grafted onto pedro, but the tbm did not grow any faster, than on it's own roots.

    Drawings

hey, phyto, I wonder what sort of effect this type of drawing, has on to you whilst you do them? I mean, I would not be surprised if this drawing process, produces some sort of meditative state for you. repetition of similar shapes, I guess you just "do it", without thinking or not? is it spontaneous or do you think hard before, every new addition structure?

    Sketches

i know your dad is a brilliant artist as well, i wonder if your children have been lucky to inherit this skill.
  5. I give away various plants (mainly, what used to be my speciality, but others aswell), because I have to discontinue growing them. they are all quite big compared to the pot size, and would need an urgent re potting after arrival. that's how it works: you need to have at least 200 posts, sorry. you pay only for postage, and a tiny ammount more for my handling and packing. the plants are to big for express post, but are proven to be happy even after longer times in transit. pm me if you interested.
  6. i had lot's of interest, so no more pm's please, unless you like to purchase some cacti.
  7. ^ mostly everything is ok, I just like to decrease my workload, in the garden.

    heimia salicifolia preparation

I believe water is the best solvent of choice, regarding extracting heimia, and above tek doesn't use a microwave oven.... here a few pics of how I prepare the heimia plants, during the seasons. the issue with heimia plants is, that they start looking very "poor", if you never prune them back harshly. I have seen heimia plants in Europe, and they looked rather poor, as well although they received far more frequent rain, meaning lack of water is only halve the reason why old, mature heima plants hardly produce lot's of healthy foliage. the problem is, old heimias mostly produce flowers and seeds, instead of leaves, meaning the yield of plants like this will be very low. on top, I believe that those "poor looking" heimias, now produce far less activas, whilst young growth, produces more potency. the answer is to prune them back strongly, right after they received heavy rainfall, than they will grow back, producing heaps of very active herb. I simply run the lawn mower over them!! choose the highest setting of the mower, and yes, it's hard for me as well to, bloody run my mower of my beloved heimia... 1, shows heimia in a "poor" state, right after some heavy rain. 2, job done, heima was cut back with the mower. 3, one month later, the plants grew back and started to produce, lush growth and with higher potency. maybe, the plant produces more actives, when young or re shooting, because it's more vunerable to grazing, whilst an old mature and seed producing plant, doesn't have to worry about those issues, because it's, large enough to survive being eaten, and as well already saved it's kind via seed production.

    Sida cordifolia questions

I never tried to germinate sidas, but as many common weeds, they might be hard to germinate. repeated cycles of dry and wet, might facilitate sprouting..., be patient, they might germ slowly. sidas grow in the wild everywhere on the east coast, so it would be better, to pick them from the wild, than to grow them at home. I don't agree with the statement that a mature ephedra does not produce a lot of herb (they produce heaps of foliage, far more than sidas given the same space), but one would have to be patient, and wait around 5 years...

    comet ison meteor shower

most likely, there will be no activity but, one has to try often to get lucky, regarding observing a spectacular meteor shower. I did more research, the radiant (the spot where the meteors seem to emerge from, is speculated, to be leo. http://www.universetoday.com/108084/a-possible-meteor-shower-from-comet-ison/ leo will rise, in the east, depending on your location, around 9pm. in short, look east close to the horizont, if trying early evening, the radiant is very close to the moon, which makes things even harder... observing meteors, after midnight or even better very early in the morning, should give better results, because, earth will, face the radiant more directly. in other words, it's a bit like when rain drops hit, the windows of a car, in forward motion, the front screen will get more hit's than the back window.

    comet ison meteor shower

there is a small chance, comet ison will produce a meteor shower. it's said the comet broke up, in perihelion, so maybe this will increase the chance of a meteor shower. the almost full moon will set around 3 am tonight, so from this time till dawn, I would look out for them! http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/444877-comet-ison-update-meteor-activity-possible-on-january-15/

Anyone here grown iboga from cuttings?

they can survive even mild short ground frosts (but protected from shade cloth), as long as the plants are super healthy.

    argyreia nervosa flowering

as hinted, they flower and set seeds only after heap's of rain in Australia (and once they are sexually mature). they need a lot of water, irrigating them is probably not enough. very common for plants, to do "nothing" for quite a while, but than after some heavy summer rains, the suddenly jump into "action".

  15. I went for a long walk today, and spotted an abundance of various sidas on the track, some of them native to Australia. many of the images one can find on the internet, regarding sida, are wrongly id'ed, so hopefully we can get it right. i hope people who know more than me, will make sure, all id's are correct. convolute photo of sida leaves i collected today: i am currently only sure to correctly indentify two of them. from the left, 1st leaf sida subsicata, 2nd sida cordifolia. from the left (sorry for the shrivelled up leaves) 1st, sida cordifolia 2nd, sida rhombifolia (?) 3rd, currently unknown 4th, sida subspicata 5th, sida acuta (?) 6th, currently unknown 1, sida subspicata, queensland hemp, a native Australian sida. 2, sida cordifolia, a non native sida. please note that, for example this, herbarium specimen of a rhombifolia, displays many small, non rhombic leaves, which means, my number 6 (wooden backround, could be as well a rhombifolia. http://www2.southeastern.edu/Academics/Faculty/rickmiller/NativePlantsImages/PlantImages/Sida%20rhombifolia.jpg sida acuta, http://www.google.com.au/imgres?q=sida+acuta&sa=X&biw=1097&bih=546&tbm=isch&tbnid=B75I2VNgWCNFJM:&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sida_acuta_Blanco2.366-original.png&docid=e3oB1kKaWl5jaM&imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/Sida_acuta_Blanco2.366-original.png&w=1404&h=2070&ei=78aVUfjqL8TzlAWz_YHACg&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:16,s:0,i:143&iact=rc&dur=1970&page=2&tbnh=175&tbnw=119&start=9&ndsp=15&tx=68.4285888671875&ty=95.85716247558594 worx in progress!

    Growing B. caapi in pots

I guess, he wants to grow by seed, so he can get, something sterile, regards tissue culture. a seed is much easier to start of in vitro, because it's sterile inside. a plant meristem is hard to clean and get sterile...

    Garden insect ID thread

lets just be clear, a leaf miner infestation, does not need to be treated, because it's never fatal to a perennial. Catha sometimes picks up leaf miners, it's never a problem insect.

datura metel alba [triple white] cross v fastuosa

your datura x crosses are good work! you saying "father not around any more" makes me think as follows. if you would breed brumansias, you could save a clone (cutting) more easy than with a datura. if you want to be able to re create any of your x crosses, than you have to work with stabilised parent plants. you get stabilised parents by inbreeding them for 4 generations or more. datura cuttings should work though as well, in other words, you could have saved all parents, via cuttings, and prolong ther life this way. than you have the parents, for x crosses as well alive for longer. some of your parent plants could be stabilised already, because of previous in breeding.
