I am over in Udon Thani. So in the north east. It's been super dry here until a week ago so only just looking like things may pop up now. Have to go back on the 22 nd or I would be keen to head over there. How did you find yours? I found a large lake near a friends house out in the sticks where a huge amount of Buffalo are taken to graze. I gunna check it out Monday. The Thailand call em Hed Keekwai, which translates to something like mushrooms from defecating Buffaloes lol.

    WA Gyms, tis the season

Interesting, there is a photo online that shows dilepis starting as a gold pin and changing purple. I have some comparison photos of the gyms I found. I'll upload them soon.

Only Large Paper bark in the immediate area but there are pines maybe a Km away. I haven't seen any gyms here associated with them.

    WA Gyms, tis the season

These photos were taken 3 years ago,12 June 2012 I think.Very small area where all these are found. Not sure how many types of gyms are here. There are the classical purps but what interests me is the very large purple gyms, some are huge, are they just large mature purps or something different? The two pins side by side that are gold and red is interesting, as is the couple of purps that have bites taken from them. That had been done over night. I went to this spit two days in a row. I will go back to this spot when I get back to Aus and see how it is this year.

Should add that my personal observations in the nasty west Aus sun is very variable. I want to know myself. I gotta say recently I rescued old plants of mine, abused as hell, left to fend for selves for over half a year. Most were very frosty. Sorry not very objective but is what have seen. As is usually ask a simple question and get a bunch more questions or maybe a less then simple answer.

Let me have a look and try and find the paper that I read. My comment on the wax being hydrophobic and therefore potentially another means of protection was just an idea thanks to Berengar. Had not even considered that prior.

Interesting both the wax and colour may help with humidity. Wax is hydrophobic and the colour has an effect, reflecting light in the high energy part of the spectrum?or higher maybe I should say.

I am confused by the increased blue when in shade. I thought the epicuticular wax acted as a way of dealing with intense light, in particular on new growth. Why does shade increase wax formation. I remember reading a paper a while back, can not remember where but it went into much detail about the blue wax as a protective layer from intense light.
  17. I was reading that Moldavite thread the other day and realised I had a reasonable bag of Indochinite Tektites I collected myself whilst walking around the rural parts of North East Thailand( a white guy gets some real interest from the locals walking around looking at the ground for ages!). They occur in a very specific strata of the soil up there and I came to recognise that it was being used to fill rice patties for construction so after rain those areas were ripe for the picking. I only want the big boy, that discoid one. The rest are just collecting dust. Do these interest anyone here?
  18. I found this back in January and gave it to a friend with some land, I thought it a Cereus Forbesii....but it looks nothing like others I've seen. It is very dehydrated. Any ideas?

    Thai Tektites- anyone interested

Glad to hear all are happy and they arrived, would have replied earlier but I've been a little busy trying to stay in one piece in the concrete jungle that is Bangkok. Hit the nail on the head with the glass bit Incog. That's basically what they are. Like volcanic glass but formed via asteroid/ meteorite impact. Same thing as moldavite just different chemical make up. Sand blasted into liquid glass only to rain down back on the earth again and in the case of those tektites still soft when they came back down. From what I read the Aussie ones travelled so far they had solidified by the time they hit the ground. They say it is the driest glass created, lower H2O content than volcanic glass and extremely difficult to recreate artificially. I've read the Chinese pump out a lot of fakes. Enjoy they were just collecting dust and I had the thought someone on here might like em. I have to say a huge thanks to everyone for all the gifts in return. I never expected such an ethno Xmas in return. Gotta love SAB! I'm actually back in Udon right now, so I expect I'll get on the beers and go give the locals a lil something to spin out at again. Fucking crazy white guy...beer in hand looking at dirt. Lol.

    eBay/Gumtree finds

I bought a plant off him years ago. It was a bit over priced but he was nice enough to deal with. Have even confronted him over bidding on his own plants. Meh. I just wish I had the space for greenhouses like his. I don't deal with him anymore. Over priced and not honest.

Winter Solstice is 21st June 2015

I will be on a plane to Bangkok on that very date. I always migrate as far from the shit eating cold and dark days as humanly possible. I shall drop to my knees kiss the warm, dirty Tarmac. Stand and start violently throwing one fingered salutes at the sky screaming repeatedly psychotic style" Fuck you Winter! I beat you again you cold hearted bitch! " after which I shall head into that hot humid beast of a city and start celebrating my personal triumph over the evil that is Winter.
