I've found Psychotria sp. to grow better in one of the cheapest potting soils available, those made of composted pine tree bark and sand, rather than more expensive peat/pearlite blends. I believe they like slightly acidic soils so that may be a part of why they seem to do better in the pine bark soil mixes. You can make leaf cuttings for propagation from pretty much any size leaf, I've usually used 3-5 inch leaves for propagation. Leaf propagation requires a lot of patience, decent humidity and warmth, cut can be done easily in a good sized jar on its side with moist vermiculite to plant the leaf in ... that way it's easy to keep the humidity up and see when roots have formed, just keep the lid on loosely enough to allow some air exchange.
