I come from a small town in Qld and there has been a recent dispute in the local newsagency. A muslim woman was dressed in her burqa and entered the newsagency with her husband. The store owner allowed the husband to purchase a newspaper, however, he refused to serve the woman. The story of the words exchanged during the encounter differ between the store owner and the woman. The woman says that the owner said that he refused to serve her because he "doesn't serve her type'. The owner says that he didn't say that and the reason he refused to serve her was because her face was covered and he was concerned for the security of the store. I understand that you can refuse to serve somebody if they are wearing a helmet or something which hides your facial identity. Would this woman have any chance of bringing this together as case for the legal system? Personally, from previous experience, I know that the store owner is a backward small minded bigot and I have no doubt in my mind that this was discriminatory attack.. Does anybody have any advice for this woman in this situation? A FOAF has seen the tape which was recording during the dispute but unfortunately there was no auditory recording..

Hey Brent,
How are you going? Was a little confused.. you are not on AE anymore? Take it you're not going to the meeting?

Wow, I didn't expect such a response. Thanks for all of your passionate replies. The woman has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and hopefully something will come from it. I think she wants an apology. I'm not sure if its' a good thing, but people in town have heard about what has happened and have decided to boycott the store.. I'm not usually a fan of rumormongering but in this case i certainly don't mind what happens to the reputation of this man. May karma work its ways.

Wow, thanks so much helping me discover this. I brought half a kilo of beans at my local health food store and I've been snacking at them since. I've been trying to cut down on my coffee intake and this has been a pretty good substitute. I don't have access to a grinder so I've been using a mortar and pestle to grind up the beans. I tried making chocolate via husk's recipe and I added a bit of chilli powder and cinnamon to spice things up. Yes, it was the best chocolate I've ever eaten.. *drools* Chocolate and oatmeal is a wonderful mixture as well. There is something about the crunchiness of the bean nibs and sloppy porridge mess which really works. I'm going to add a bit of banana into the mix tommorrow. Oh yeah, I also had a bit of bread dough left over so I put a some brown sugar and crushed beans inside the dough and cooked them for 20 minutes. Amazing stuff

When I was driving up to bundaberg the other week, I picked up a couple of english backpackers that had just been staying down at the arts factory. They actually managed to get an entire week of accommodation for free by doing chores for few hours. Seems like they really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place - they ended up getting married in the garden there

The philosophers zone has been a favourite of mine for ages now WYNC's radiolab podcasts are also great. There is a good mixture of philosophy, psychology and weird science facts to keep you entertained for hours- Awesome presenters and decent guest speakers (Oliver Sacks). You can get mp3's and podcasts from here - http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/season1_2005.html.

domide replied to RonnySimulacrum's topic in News & Notices
Oh wow, what a treat Hoping very much to make it down to the festival. This gives me even more initiative. -
Well done I know what that feels like. I managed to pass horrible horrible statistics as well (by 1% mind you) and its so good to be free of being forced to do that brain-sucking subject. Lets also celebrate being finished uni for the year. F*ck yeah!!
