    Botanical Ark

I've been visiting Cairns for the last few weeks and today I meet this man who gave me some very interesting information. He mentioned that there was a private nursery up around Port Douglas who have a license to import and quarentine rare plant species. They specialise in ethnobotanical and tropical plants. I was curious if anybody has visited this place before. They seem to quite closed to the general public but I'm hoping they will let me in if I beg The website is www.botanicalark.com. Check out the links on the webpage.. some are quite interesting.

    Meet up: Melbourne

I'm here now. Haven't been able to locate anybody yet. I'm wearing jeans and a black jumper.
  4. I'm a huge fan of Werner Herzog. If he requested, I would probably eat his boots. I think he is more known for directing documentaries, and I personally prefer his documentaries. His way of connecting with his interviewees is remarkable. It's almost as though they feel they can be completely honest and transparent in his presence. Here is a link to a short documentary about text driving he did recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk1vCqfYpos I'd also recommend watching "Fitzcarrldo" (feature film), "Grizzly Bear" (doco) and "Into the Abyss" (another doco).

    Orange colouration in seedling media

Yeh, I microwaved all my containers for about five minutes.
  7. I need some help identifying a potential fungal disease in my cactii seedlings. Last night, I noticed an orange patches in some of my seedling containers and I'm really freaking out. Is this just some weird discolouration of the soil, or do you think this is a sign of disease? The soil media is 100% propagation sand. I have searched similar topics, and found that fungicide or removing the lids to dehydrate the fungus is the best way of preventing further infection. What would you guys recommend when this happens? I'm leaning more towards removing the lids. Thanks in advance

Yeah, I'm really keen too. Perhaps we should consider somewhere an hour or two drive north of Brisbane to accommodate for the more northern qlder's. Any thoughts on late April?? I'm free until October.. I think I have may have wedding a wedding to attend. Thrilling life I lead

    Pallet furniture

Fantastic work, lhb2444 I was doing the same when I was back at uni.. no pictures unfortunately. I've made a rat enclosure, a coffee table and a side table from salvaged pallets. I always found them really difficult to break up, especially the hard wood ones and I usually ended up splitting the wood and wasting half the pallet. I've purchased a circular saw now, but I'm too afraid to use it so it sits in my cupboard collecting dust. I could never get the neatness you have in work.. I got pretty lazy after hand sawing for hours. Anyhow, I wanted to say that bamboo is a pretty amazing building material and you can completely forgo the nails and glue. I made this awesome loft bed and teepee with a few ropes, nicely placed cuts and a machette. If you ask and look around you should be easily able to source some free material.

    Earth Freq festival

Yeah, Shortly. I left early on the Sunday. I really wasn't prepared for the whole three days of socializing. Too many people and too much interaction for my shy little head.

    Earth Freq festival

What a fun party! I was very impressed with the organization this year.. It's really become a huge event over the last few years. It was lovely to run into you, Shortly. I hope you and Obtuse enjoyed the rest of the festival. Hopefully everybody got home safely and quickly. I heard some of the roads got flooded in up there.

    preparing for winter

Perhaps I should put my own competing advertisement up. For $9mil, I will split your logs - rain, hail or shine and better yet, I don't require any petrol and I will automatically return your logs directly into your fireplace. This must be a mistake. They've already sold seven of these machines.
  15. Nice work, GoOnThen.. I'd love to have some sort of automated water system. I planted out my remaining trich hybrid seeds using the takeaway tek. I also watered my two month old germinated seedlings for the first time with a half-strength seasol mixture.

    Meet up: Brisbane

I can't wait either, Johny! The slip and slide makes it much more appealing. Though, I'm still unsure if I'm going to earthfreq - it's on the same date I believe. Wish I could make it to both of these events.
  18. Thanks, THC! Mine arrived yesterday..
  19. I've been experimenting with growing cacti from seed for the last couple of months and have had very little success. For my first attempt, I used the 'take-away tek' with two different mediums: 100% propagation sand and 60:40% sand and coco coir. I waited four weeks and the only germinating seeds were in the 100% sand mix. I figured the sand mix must be the medium for me, so I prepped another 4 containers with 100% sand. Six weeks later, and I'm yet to see any activity from these seeds. The containers are keep in an open, large plastic box near my windowsill. I've tapped white plastic bags to the walls of the box, and I sit one open plastic bag over the top of the containers. The room can get to temps of 35C, but it usually sits between 20-30C. I've followed the steps the take-away tek exactly, except this time I only microwaved the container for 3 minutes and then one minute. Does anybody have any suggestions of what I could be doing wrong. The only two possible things I can think of are - the lack of light in the room (I keep the venetian blinds down all day, and the room is quite dark) or the amount of water I used to wet the sand before microwaving. I don't want to give up, but it's breaking my heart every time I look at the containers

    Trich Germination: Need Advice

Just to update the above posters: I prepared another 4-5 containers, moved them to my cooler bathroom and saturated the sand with a lot more water than previously used. Every single container has seeds that have germinated! Thanks everyone for tips and inspiration :D I do have another question - I've been obsessively watching a previous container with seedlings that are about 2 months old (see below photos). Do these look a little elongated? Should I move them to more sunlight and when should I fertilize them? I don't understand how they are growing in 100% sand with no nutrients..
