So I arrive at avalon at about 230 on the friday, anyone gotta car and want some company? Ill be on my best behaviour. Alternatively I would be willing to hire a car and share some of the costs?

    EGA transport

Thanks for the link alkatrope. Only problem is I'm flying into Avalon, and there is not much interest shown for a coach from avalon, so the question remains, anyone flying into avalong on the friday arvo wanna share costs in getting to ega?

Vitamin D's role in mental health

Hi all long time no post! A short excerpt from this site http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/mentalIllness.shtml Admittedly I havent done much cross examination of the evidence, but these guys look pretty legit and the journals theyre quoting are respectable. The second paragraph offers a very interesting insight into why people go to the beach after big nights out. Monoamine synthesis is moderated by Vitamin D Exposure. D's Function In The Brain Garcion, et al, 2002, reviewed clues about vitamin D function in the brain. They concluded 1,25(OH)2D3 is involved in brain function with nuclear receptors for vitamin D localized in neurons and glial cells. Genes encoding the enzymes involved in the metabolism of this hormone are also expressed in brain cells. The reported biological effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 in the nervous system include the biosynthesis of neurotrophic factors and at least one enzyme involved in neurotransmitter synthesis. 1,25(OH)2D3 can also inhibit the synthesis of inducible nitric oxide synthase and increase glutathione levels, suggesting a role for the hormone in brain detoxification pathways. Neuroprotective and immunomodulatory effects of this hormone have been described in several experimental models, indicating the potential value of pharmacological analogs in neurodegenerative and neuroimmune diseases. In addition, 1,25(OH)2D3 induces glioma cell death, making the hormone of potential interest in the management of brain tumors. Garcion E, Wion-Barbot N, Montero-Menei CN, Berger F, Wion DNew clues about vitamin D functions in the nervous system.Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2002 Apr;13(3):100–5. Eyles D, Brown J, Mackay-Sim A, McGrath J, Feron FVitamin D3 and brain development.Neuroscience. 2003;118(3):641–53. Vitamin D is a potent inhibitor of mitosis and promoter of differentiation in numerous cells and specifically decreases the percentage of cultured hippocampal cells undergoing mitosis in conjunction with increases in both neurite outgrowth and nerve growth factor (NGF) in cultured brain cells. Brown J, Bianco JI, McGrath JJ, Eyles DW1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 induces nerve growth factor, promotes neurite outgrowth and inhibits mitosis in embryonic rat hippocampal neurons.Neurosci Lett. 2003 Jun 5;343(2):139–43. Lambert, et al, drew arterial and venous blood samples form 101 healthy Australian men over a one-year period and found strong correlations between ambient sunlight and production of serotonin in the brain. Lambert GW, Reid C, Kaye DM, Jennings GL, Esler MDEffect of sunlight and season on serotonin turnover in the brain.Lancet. 2002 Dec 7;360(9348):1840–2. An alternate explanation, other than vitamin D production, explaining the feeling of well being after sun exposure, is related to the recent discovery of endorphin production by the skin after UV exposure. Wintzen M, Yaar M, Burbach JP, Gilchrest BAProopiomelanocortin gene product regulation in keratinocytes.J Invest Dermatol. 1996 Apr;106(4):673–8. Wintzen M, Zanello SB, Holick MF, Wiegant VM, Burbach JP, Vermeer BJCondition-dependent presence of beta-lipotropin-like peptide in human keratinocytes.Peptides. 2000 May;21(5):691–7. However, two recent studies have been unable to document any increase in circulating endorphins after UVA exposure. Check out the rest of the site. They mention optimum exposure is only a few minutes with most of the body exposed per day.

    Political parties

Now i realise that i may be the only one on this forum that feels this way, but the recent changes in laws seem to me to be excessively limiting our civil liberties (I know I know I'm a bit radical). I was having interesting discussions with a friend recently who has interests that are also being threatened or at least limited by the changing political/social climate on what parties we vote for. In the last couple of elections i have voted green, because despite not reflecting by beliefs entirely, they represent something i find quite important. However on closer inspection, some of the environmental policies by the greens were based in belief rather than in cold hard scientific facts, and they don't really push the freedom/civil rights envelope that much. i can provide examples if pressed. My friend recommended the shooters party. I have had a brief look over their policies, and whilst I don't necessarily like the idea of everyone walking around potentially armed with a gun, there were some interesting policies they have. In particular # 7 & 8 here: http://www.shootersparty.org.au/index.php?...2&Itemid=56 Someone once said to me, if the druggies and the gun nuts joined forces, politically they would hold a lot more sway... Pity the drugs make people scared of guns and the guns make people scared of drugs Is anyone aware of some interesting political parties that are a little different to the ones that we are generally presented with in the mainstream? What do you think of the shooters party?

    Nuclear power

Taken from Fritjof Capra's book "the turning point" Plutonium a waste product from nuclear plants has a half life of 24400 years. Less that one millionth of a gram is fatal. 1 pound evenly distributed across the earth would be enough to induce lung cancer in every single human. Each commercial reactor produces 400-500 pounds of plutonium per year. Tons of plutonium are transported over land. If plutonium kills an organism, it doesn't vanish, it stays in the environment, probably in the food chain for 500 000 years. Projections made in 1975, if the industry contains its plutonium with 99.9% efficacy, it will be responsible for 500,000 fatal lung cancer deaths per year by the year 2020. A 25% increase in the death rate in America. in 1983 projections by the nuclear industry for intensely radioactive "high level" waste was estimated to be 152 million gallons by the year 2000. This is not including waste from military reactors.

    Disturbing Video

i just watched that video in entirety. it doesnt look fake in the slightest, it was horrible to watch. i would be surprised if anyone here supported the fur industry let alone owned a fur coat. its unnecessary and clearly unpleasant. im all for killing a rabbit with a bullet to the head and skinning it. but when you turn it into an industry where speed and cost become #1 priority, ethics goes out the window.

    New Sun Control Species

i remember hearing only human at quantum relic in the morn as the sun was coming up, i had a really difficult evening the night before, and this brought a tear to my eye and signalled the dawn of a new realisation truly beautiful, if you get the chance see them live. the other time i saw scs live was at earthfreq and that was the most powerful experience of proper energy on the dancefloor ever, that slow warp sound hit me in the top of the head and literally felt like touching an electric fence!

The Right Brain vs Left Brain

Initially clockwise for me. On repeated exposure it was clockwise, the only time its appeared anticlockwise naturally, without looking at feet, was today. One thing ive noticed is im less stressed today than i have been recently. Yeah i noticed if i closed my eyes and visualised someone spinning clockwise for 30 seconds or so then it would do that, and if i imagined aniticlockwise for 30 seconds it would do that. I would like to see the actual study behind it.

How to live a happy life...

Happiness is not really what youre after. a good question to ask is, if i were happy what would i do differently? the answer to that is more related to your core values, the things that give life meaning. being unhappy all the time is unnecessary, however feeling happy all the time is neither desirable realistic nor possible. What makes us unhappy is an unwillingness to experience unpleasant emotions, looking from thoughts rather than at them, and allowing unpleasant emotions to cloud or stop you from living a values driven life. IMHO
