  1. Often in the plant community you'll find yourself in a discussion (often around cacti) involving naming and identification of various plants. The arc of the discussion usually starts with crude estimating at what a particular clone a plant is, then comes refining of the 'model' that makes up the characteristics of said plant, and from there any further discussion disintegrates into pseudo-scientific ambiguity. Sometimes (if you're lucky!) the topic of DNA sequencing is used to short-circuit the downward spiral into taxonomic hell: "well, we can only really know which plant is which once they've been sequenced." Why the hell isn't this DNA sequencing happening so we can stop wasting all this precious oxygen on arguments around "what is a macrogonus", or "this is what a pachanoid looks like"? Is it really so prohibitively expensive that nobody has taken it upon themselves to send some samples into a lab to get sequenced? Am I trivialises/generalises how difficult it actually is to do the DNA sequencing of a plant? I am genuinely curious. What are the practical barriers to getting, say, the Trichocereus genus (yes im sticking to old nomenclature) sequenced so we can settle the argument once and for all when it comes to identification? Imagine that this genus has already been sequenced, how would laypeople in the plant community then use this information to correctly identify their plants?
  2. SALE IS OVER!! Thanks to everyone who responded, showed support, and bought a cactus or two. It's been very much appreciated. If you're still keen to get a cut or three you can catch me at Garden States (https://www.entheogenesis.org/garden_states_2019) in the market stall section You will find a cactus in here just for you! I'm massively downsizing my collection of (almost entirely) shade-grown Trichocereus cacti so I'm having a "fire sale" from now until April 15th. There are all sorts of genetics in here: Psycho0, Yowie, Jess, Cactus Country J5/J14/J15 (aka Jims hybrids), Bendigo bridge, countless hybrids (and I really mean it!), distinct unnamed cultivars that I've picked up in my travels along this thirteen year cactus cultivating and collection journey . Propagation has been by seed and cutting. There are freaking old mature plants and little youngins. A pretty decent chunk of the columnar Tricho spectrum is covered here. A lot of the pachanoi (and some bridgesii) you see here, in my opinion, is mostly suited to grafting (or ceremonial use if you're in a country which allows for it) so make me a sweet offer because I'm willing to rid myself of it very easily and quickly. Sale guidelines: everything must go make me an offer! I accept cash, bank deposit and Paypal open to trades but keep in mind that I'm aiming to reduce the number of plants I have serious offers only (time-wasters may be liable to being offended) buyer pays for postage unless you're picking up locally payment secures the sale - I can't stress that enough (using a forum without a payment mechanism leaves you open to serious fuck-arounds from people, sad but true ) sale ends April 15th Melbournians! If you would like to make an appointment to come roam around the garden and work out a deal in person (I'm northside) then simply private message me Visual delights...
  3. With any luck I might have a few left over around that time however the sale officially ends April 15th (it has to as I'm moving out completely from my current place)
  4. It's mu! again, this time with lots of Yowie cuttings, both mid and tip cuttings (there's an especially large doubly-tipped cutting up for auction). Check out the links on eBay: Trichocereus (peruvianoid) "Yowie" San Pedro cactus - 30cm midcut, two pups Trichocereus (peruvianoid) "Yowie" San Pedro cactus - 92cm double tip cutting <-- auction Trichocereus (peruvianoid) "Yowie" San Pedro - 90cm tip cutting Trichocereus (peruvianoid) "Yowie" San Pedro cactus - 58cm midcut, three pups Trichocereus (peruvianoid) Yowie - 84cm midcut, three pups And here are just a handful of images from the item listings:
  5. Hello fellow plant heads. Due to moving house (it ran away! *badum-tiss*) I am drastically reducing my Trichocereus collection, starting with all of the Psycho0 cuttings. Listed here on eBay you'll find many of my delicious Psycho0 cuttings up for grabs at $50 per 60cm cutting (tip). They've copped a bit of scarring but other than that they're tip-top - see the item description for more details. Here are some of the photos from the listing. If you have further questions PM me here or via eBay, I'll be checking in on both regularly. ALSO, keep an eye on this space (i.e. sales subforum) for my once-in-a-lifetime-everything-must-go-tricho-bonanza moving house sale, where I'll have a variety of big, beautiful, interesting Trichos for sale. There's quite a bit to get rid of, and if you live in Melbourne and can teleport your good self to my place then we can even cut a pickup/in-person deal

I'll be coming along with a few choice cuts of shade grown Psycho0 and J hybrids for sale it's been a while since I've been to a meet, looks like it'll be a cracker of a day for it too
  7. Incarvillea sinensis is a small shrubby plant endemic to Mongolia, occurring in dry steppe regions where the soil is mainly sandy loam. There, the plant likes total exposure and dry climate where it easily propagates by seed (of which there is no dormancy period). This species has a sensitive stigma, and its two open stigmatic lobes close soon after being touched by a pollinator, but always reopen if no or only little pollen was deposited. Some sources say flowers take some 1-2 years to come about but I've personally witnessed it happen within less than 5 months. It contains a potent analgesic monoterpene alkaloid, incarvillateine, many times more potent in its antinociceptive properties than morphine. I thought I'd have a crack at growing this plant because being in pain-free is pretty fun, right? There doesn't appear to be many people growing this plant and there is skant info in that regard. One good source is this SAB thread (thanks mindperformer!) where you'll find links to some papers, etc, and some good closeup shots of mindperformers home-grown plants. You can find some decent info here as well but no personal writeups of growing the plant. If you'd like to have a crack at growing them then you can definitely get seed here and here (in the UK). There are a few other species of Incarvillea growing in the bot gardens in Melbourne so they mustn't do too badly down here. I've heard that the seed responds well to the cold in order to wake it up, improving germination rates so I've put a few seeds in a take-away container in some moist (but not wet) standard potting mix and put them in the fridge. In two weeks I'll take them out of the fridge and into a shaded area where they won't dry out. You might not be able to tell from the photo but the seed is pretty tiny, about half the size of a chilli seed, and they look exactly alike. Fingers crossed I get some seedlings out of this!

  9. Some of you, perhaps in the IT industry, have heard of a program called Slack. It's primarily used for helping teams effectively communicate. Basically it's an in-browser chat program where you can talk shit about whatever. It has cute emoji's, different plugin/apps and all kinds of bells and whistles. You can create different 'channels', or meetup rooms to discuss specific topics, or you can private chat people - all in realtime. I've used it extensively in the past and it's been great fun. In the past we've had numerous incarnations of 'chat for SAB' with varying success. Old-school SABers will remember fondly the days of The Lab. It used the good old IRC protocol but it had shortcomings like requiring a separate program, and generally looking pretty foreign to most people. So I decided to make a Slack "team" called SABchat which you can find here. EDIT: as it turns out the signup process is email invite-only, which sucks, so if you want to get chatting then PM me your preferred signup email and I'll send you an invite. I think the Slack creators do this to weed out any random-signup idiots/assholes. If you're concerned about privacy you could just create a dummy email address and use that purely for the signup/invite process. To get started, sign in with an email address[*], pick a username and a profile pick. For the latter two I'd suggest keeping it the same as here on SAB to avoid confusion but whatever, its up to you. There is a channel called "general" which is where most conversation will take place however more topic-centric channels could easily be added if the need arises. I'll take responsibility for tech questions related to Slack both here on the forum and in the Slack channel. However I won't always be in the channel so you're better off posting questions here - please avoid duplicating though because that gets annoying real fast. @Torsten can you please let me know if this is overstepping any boundaries or if you'd like the name changed. And as always feedback appreciated. mu. [*] regarding the email address: it isn't shown to other members in the channel. Only usernames show up.
  10. being closed-source there's not much you can assert about it's security mechanisms
  11. Regardless of how many layers of foil you use always make sure it's of the finest grade certified organic nutjob-handrolled
  12. Your chat text is sent over SSL/TLS in the browser (thats the 's' in 'https://' in the address bar) which is an encrypted protocol, so it is secure in that sense. Contrast that to the forum which doesn't have SSL/TLS which means your communications with it are sent 'in the clear' (i.e. unencrypted) and can therefore be eavesdropped. However, it is not secure in the sense that you can say whatever you like on there with impunity - if a government agency had reason enough to serve a subpoena to Slack to bring up all chat logs for any chatroom or user, they definitely could. What you say there is associated with the email address you sign up with (as it is here on SAB, or any service requiring email registration). So long as that email address is tied to your personal identity (I.P. address, online banking, online gov services, etc) then there is a clear link between you and your chat history. Tinfoilers will sign up with a bogus email address not associated with them, and use a VPN to hide their activity from their ISP. As long as you're keepin it legal (or frame your rhetoric so as not to incriminate yourself) you'll be fine
  13. @Zedo is signed up so you can PM him/her for an invite now too
