Most of the cacti ive had with fungal issues are the ones whose defenses have been lowered with poor care, commonly its a desperate need of repotting. I seasol and keep out in the breeze till things look up.

Hi and apologies for the rudimentary questions on varigation. Ive been growing a little while and was yet to see any varigation. Are these treshicchii indeed varigated? I didnt separate these and replant together. They were plucked out together from the seedling tray and stuck in this pot, so is it viral or something?The other 20-30 odd show no such colouring. As a genetic mutation the odds seem far too great to have 4 in a group?? They have been growing a little ecspecially of late and seem quite healthy.

You misunderstood me I think. I wasnt asking about grafting, rather: Why is varigation occurring? 'Is varigation caused by a contact virus?' If so 'Is all varigation caused by the same factors?' I grafted a couple yesterday see how they go.

I have some success reducing indoor pests by putting plants outside in the wind for the day ( But caapi might not be so easy to move.) Ive thought about getting a few little usb fans to make life less cosy.

I separated the above treshicchii and my take is that the colouring is from a virus spread by contact. These prior to separating contacted at the point where it's pink. For better or worse i grafted the two other smaller pieces. Check out the cut! I have one other pot of seedlings showing similar colour. A knuthianus x. The two teeny ones will probably cark it if i dont act. The larger appears to be bending (apex pointing towards the camera) so as to shield the yellow area from light.

Hi Mcgrath, these were the best sticks i had too. No stress my ego can survive my shitty peres. Couple of thoughts. I do find peres hard to grow over the Tas winter but ive also given little attention to them too. Had been growing in pots sitting in sphagnum moss. From my limited xp it seems spring is a good time to graft for me. I pull off quite a few leaves too below the graft to make life easier. In answer to your question I'm not sure leaves are all that...re peres. But as a novice im not solid on any assumptions, maybe a wiser head might chime in. I choose for woodyness (lack of) and the diameter that will suit my scion. To give you some idea the Lophs and the Rebutia are all degrafts from 1yo grafts on peres (shouldda seen them mate). They seemed to grow at a good enough rate they got to about 4cm across in a year with little foliage but maybe im missing out on boomtown. Im having fun as Ive grown a few hundred grusonii and was curious to experiment with if i can speed up growth and degraft to root and what are the best times and methods for this. For example how much stock tissue does the scion take on? Will this effect the ball shape i want if i have to take too much (i doubt this)? Is trich or opuntia better? Trich tissue seems to not invade the scion as much in my observations. Having done lophs it seems to me you have to cut out a fair bit, they're pretty soft eh. This was a 1st experiment into that. Of course first of all wanted to see if they'd take. Once ive experimented I'll do a bulk lot. I took a sneaky peak at one today. Check this little fellow. Atm they all showing signs of punching into the parafilm and its been a week. Good signs. Heres a 1yo loph with just 2 leaves. The peres is getting woody now but the scion is firm and fruity. The bottom section of the Rebutia (that i cut stock tissue out of) i let heal for a few days then redressed (without making a tight seal) the cut to keep moisture in. It was an experiment into how can i degraft the above Loph and keep in as much of 1 piece as i can. Ie. can i minimize moisture reduction and risk of rot?

Tried grafting some new things, I'll be interested to see how they go. Soehresia 'Crimson x Hot red' Rebutia minuscula I grafted the base too then cored out the remaining peres tissue after unwrapping. Its on a pretty small offcut without roots so see if it dehydrates or kicks on. Nothing to lose was just banging together leftovers. Echinocactus grusonii Did some lophs too. Huizache. Some leftovers again ...and one of those yellow jobbers that they flog at mitre10. You know the ones the kids make you buy as part of an unwritten agreement to actually get out of the car and come in.

Im having trouble seeing the varigation in these Sayn? But yes it makes sense that there are gene variations. I guess some may have mistaken mosiac virus for varigation in the past but that doesn't appear to be the case for these pics. The 2 little chaps appear to be quite different.

Parafilm greatly improved my success rate. I dont touch them, dont move them, dont even look sideways at em. For the initial period anyway.
