Cactus of the month year day thread? Which cactus is really shining for you right now?

Meangreen everything was fine to me and after darkness the light will come. We all have to deal with duality and I hope we can meet in the future again to talk about and with plants.

Inyan, imagine the mother. This is only a small pup. Unfortunatly i have no pics of the mother. This pup was taken from a cutting that died away after severe freezing damage. The pup survived minus 15 celsius and freezing for a couple of days. Saved it.

    Grafting to old Pereskiopsis?

I tried it in spring, the failure rate was way higher and it tooks longer for the scion to grow. It also took longer for the peres and tge scion to connect. Old peres was woody and fat. The reason I did, because I had no fresh peres left. I prefer younger peres after that experience.

    Cactus help!

For rooting i prefer soil with a high content of minerals like pumice. Pumice alone is a great substrat. The pumice absorbs the water and at the same time allows ventilation. It drys out quickly. Often i water from the bottom, so the water doesnt reach the cut, but the plant can “smell“ the water just a few centimeters away and send out roots in thar direction. I never put pebbles on top. That is a hindrance for ventilation.e

I have quite a few different crosses growing, scop as mother or father. Scop genes seems to be very dominant on the visible side. Will see what the future brings out of approx. thousand seedlings.

The colored San Pedro Flower Project

Yesterday I got this truckload of different sp., candicans, lobivias, lamprochlorus, shaferii and a lot of colored flower hybrids from a grower. All are going in the ground in our park. This is a big step for future projects. Many Motherplants of those were brought from Helmut Fechser from Argentina/SA to germany.

The colored San Pedro Flower Project

First flower of Eliana this year. More to come. 20 buds or so, are waiting.
  23. Mine had their first winter in the ground and exposed to mediterranean climate. Wet winters here, 120-150 liter rain/month. Like 5-8 days rain and then sunny. Temps down to minus 6 celsius maximum. Longest period of frost, 48 hours, with snow. Older plants suffered, depending on location and also sp.. Got some plants from greenhouses, not really hardgrown. They suffered the most. Plants I hardend up the winters before, did better. Frosthardy plants, which were grown in a greenhouse can get damaged very fast, they need acclimatisation. What i learned is, just let them be as they are after thoroughly preparing the soil, with raised beds and drainage. 25 percent frostdamage here, but this will grow out. Next winter I will see, how they deal with it. The younger plants I grew from seeds, most seedlings from zelly got no damage and started new growth vibrant in april. They were very hard grown from seed to prepare them for the heat and cold/wet winter conditions in spain. Maybe they learned that way like kids. Old proverb comes in my mind. Never relocate an old tree.

How many ribs does the plant have? Looks like 8. The plant is very fat compared to its height. The skin texture looks unique too. The plants i grow from this cross have all 5-6 ribs. Awesome plant. Best luck pollinating this jewel.
