Heya PH,  I'm now in Whangarei, I've got various cacti that you could come rescue and I'd be interested in Khat, have got heaps of Hemia growing, still not used it yet though, have you?

Heya FTB, Ahh cool, I'm a little further up at Peria near Taipa which is a suburb of Kaitaia, the hotel california of New Zealand! I've been here since late 2015 and still trying to leave the place..:scratchhead:

Your welcome to some red leaf Khat. I just have the two varieties now. Nice plants though. There are some that  have been growing in the ground and a few backups in pots. I'll pass you one of each. And I'll throw in a Sally D cutting in too.:P

Thanks heaps, I'm curious about your cactus collection..

I remember seeing those amazing specimens at the quarry gardens down there. Hopefully the cactus garden is still there after that awful flooding.

So far I've been a bit wary of trying out the Hemia after reading that some people have had some painful side affects such as aching muscles. It's possible that their dosage was too high perhaps. I may try a small dose and see what happens. Or maybe not lol.

The plants are very attractive as you will know. A couple have reached well over a meter and still growing. They have been hammered by the chickens, dog and our 2 year old son and still producing loads of seeds!

  2. Hi all,:P Just wondering if anyone is still using this thread... It looks like it's been a little while and I've not reached out for some time... I have some Hemia salcifolia seed, ' sun opener' hope that I spelt this right, to give away to anyone over here in NZ. Its time to give back. :innocent_n:

It's possible that I may have some small red leaf Khat offsets to give out soon. I just need to check the plants first. I'm in the far North of the North island now.

Also anyone still growing Calea zakatechichi in NZ?:scratchhead:

  3. I would be interested in growing this hybrid, sadly New Zealand has banned many Myrtle species including austromyrtus because of the myrtle rust.

So my ones are particularly rare over here, maybe the only ones in cultivation over here.

Some have began to flower earlier this week :)

The window has been kept open occasionally to encourage pollination by insects. I have had a go with a chook feather, just in case:P

    Hi all,

I'm desperately looking for this plant. I can feel it calling me.

I live in New Zealand and this plant is no longer allowed to be sold. There is a possibility that some people may still have it. I'm willing to pay top dollar for this really cool plant. I'm happy to pick it up whenever it may be.

Fingers crossed that someone in this community or somebody they know still has it...

Hello one of my all time fave SABers sir! :3

Aww thank you sweet cheeks ;D I had best get some botanical porn up in the gallery pretty sharpish thenB)

  7. There must be some research about it somewhere. Shall have a dig around. They made it through a Northland winter, that's not particularly cold as such but they had to put up with a fair bit of standing water around their roots for several weeks. Tried uploading a photo and the it wouldn't work blah!:BANGHEAD2:

  8. Ahh. Got to get myself over there to visit those gardens. There is so much stuff growing at these gardens of interest to me. Never tried it as was unsure about soaking the leaves for so long, seems a bit like old salad leaves lol. If there is a different way maybe, do you soak yours or do something different?

Yes! The seeds were from you! :D

I've been able to share the seed around too. They're doing much better in larger pots by themselves and some of them now are starting to branch off.

A few huge sun opener plants at the Royal botanic gardens really inspired me to keep they well looked after

I knew that you would do well with them. B) your seed came from two parents plants out in my garden and they are flowering right now. The more space that you give them, the more they will become multi stemmed monsters! Which botanic gardens did you see them at?

So i repotted all the individual plants (which i now have sooo many of) and realised one of these weeds got to repotted too! Only saw it yesterday... The leaves of the sun opener are very bitter, the weeds are not :)

It does look a bit like stevia.. Not a 100% sure tho..:P

If there's a return to a search box on mobile then hooray. Otherwise it's still with Google.

Ok will watch out for that next time Waterboy when I can get on the pc B)

not sure I understand what you're referring to.

the search function for this software has always been rather crap so I mostly use google to search the forums.

The good news is that the next upgrade will apparently introduce a whole new search engine.

Thanks Torsten I'll look forward to it :P

  13. When I used to be more frequent on this site, there was a practical helpful way of searching for information such as a particular species of plant, specific photo or any subjects that have been discussed. Has this been taken away? I doubt it but its seriously doing my head in :BANGHEAD2: looking for it. Could it be because I'm using my cell phone for the internet? But then and again that should make no difference... Please help me before I totally lose the plot lol :uzi:
