Thanks, Glaukus. Looks more like the taquimbalensis Micromegas posted earlier. This stout-spined tacaquirensis is an elusive plant! I'm quite surprised it's not a more popular / sort after species.

I've got a tacaquirensis and it's super slow growing and prone to rot. Nursing it through it's early years and hopefully it'll be good once established.

That makes sense. Beautiful plant, but really after the stout-spined tacaquirensis. What's the ABG werd look like? Never seen any photos of it.

The ABG "werdemannianus" (not my pic)

I had some unrooted Tricho tips standing in a pot. One of them fell over in the middle of this crazy heatwave, and in a matter of hours was completely cooked. It will probably survive, but with significant scarring from sunburn. In the vertical position, this cutting was adapted to full-sun conditions (and all of its peers, remaining vertical, suffered no damage at all). Lesson learned.

They almost always come good. I've cooked loads of em, and they outgrow it pretty quickly, given some TLC.

The Fiji Kava website has powdered root powder for pre-order. My guess it's similar to the 'instant kava' stuff that was going around just before (and immediately after) the Kava ban.

No personal importation by individuals allowed, but I consider this a win. If it starts getting popular in Australia, that's certainly a win for Fiji provided there isn't another moral panic.

Not sure what I was expecting but at $200/kg for powdered kava, it's no cheaper than the grey market stuff available now. It would want to be some seriously good waqa.

I heard about this case, and have to wonder why anyone would try this. I guess he was in a very bad place to begin with.

I've also heard of a recent trend towards "boofing" various things like cactus tea. Which is also a very bad idea, maybe slightly less dangerous than IV injection, but nonetheless, bypassing the various filters and systems the body has in place to avoid such pathogens can end very badly.

Out of curiosity, how do people ID them other than the flowers, or pod size?

Well, apparently anything with white petals and purple spots is a "Tasmanian" according to the punters on the SAB Facebook page haha! (Don't get me started!)

In all seriousness though, unless you have certified seeds from a reputable source, where there was no chance of interbreeding, nobody knows. They hybridise at the drop of a hat.

You can take a stab at some fairly identifiable ones like danish flag, hens and chickens, pink peony etc. But anything else is a guess at best.

  7. It's weird how something that is normally tolerated can cause an abnormal reaction like that.

Christmas Eve last year, I had a dose of some opiates that would normally just be quite mild. An hour in and I was having clear signs of a bad allergic reaction. 2 hours in and I asked my wife to be ready to call me an ambulance. I was covered in hives, my lips and tongue were swollen to the point I struggled to speak, and I was fainting due to low blood pressure. In the end we decided I should just ride it out, cos being in emergency ward on Christmas Eve sucks (I know this from experience!). It was a scary old night.

Hope you feel better soon DL.

  8. Most, if not all of our political problems could be solved with one decisive action: ban ALL political donations.

Then the only reason any politician has to put their name on a ballot paper is to actually serve their electorate. Rather than cosying up to donors to assure themselves a seat on a board later.

Someone will know better than me, but wasn't it also a case of ' think of the indigenous communities " where there was imports going into the Northern dry communities as extra weight on bans?

Well that's a straw man argument concocted by the Howard government wasn't it. Yes, indigenous communities were having problems with kava. They also have problems with alcohol, petrol sniffing, and many other things. So, let's take a look at that. Was petrol banned? I suppose Opal ( non sniffable fuel) was introduced in the NT. Alcohol? Well, I've stayed at Uluru and it's freely available if you're white, you just can't buy it if you're black.

So it seems to me, kava was targeted specifically. If you live in a community with no hope because of the systemic racism built into every law, you'd probably be looking for any escape you can find too.

Last time I checked we're not guilty until proven innocent in this country.

Unfortunately that hasn't been quite true since not long after 911 when sweeping laws were introduced that allow for detention without charge, and other draconian measures akin to minority report.

It's a shame nobody lined the streets protesting about those laws which were an actual attack on our freedom and the rule of law...

Unbelieveable. Especially when you see those border security TV shows where they test a substance and get a result in seconds. Hoe the officers involved get sacked and pay the costs themselves and that the victims are compensated from their pockets, not public funds.....wishful thinking and will never happen though

It's the supervisors and managers of those Frontline officers who need a boot.

  12. Good. It was a totally racist policy made with little understanding of the cultural significance of kava to the islander communities.

Edit: just read the statement and I'm disappointed. By the sounds of it, they are talking about pre-processed kava products for drinking, not powdered kava roots? Did I read that correctly?

And what does "safest and most effective" mean? Low or high in kavalactones?

Still, it's an improvement. It will be interesting to see what prices are like.
