Tinderrhoea: Tinder fuelled STI boom amongst young Adelaide heterosexuals?

Gonorrhoea transmission rates have significantly increased amongst young Adelaide heterosexuals, raising the question of whether this could be due to the use of dating apps like Tinder.

A new study found annual gonorrhoea transmission rates increased 153% during the 2012-2017 reporting period, with the publication in Sexually Transmitted Diseases identifying the bacterial infection is highly concentrated in specific areas, amongst low income populations and within high-risk populations.

Dr. Emma Miller from the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University says the results signify a new epidemic of gonorrhoea, separate from ongoing epidemics in high risk groups, in young heterosexuals engaging in casual or unprotected sexual activities, which could indicate long term increases in HIV and STI transmission if behavioural trends continue.

"The significant increase in gonorrhoea notifications in 2016 and 2017 in our study were found to be associated with young heterosexuals. Changes in sexual behaviour have occurred with the emergence of dating apps which have become a part of single life during emerging adulthood," says Dr. Miller.

"The rapid emergence of internet technologies has facilitated the identification of potential partners in convenient geographic proximity and resulted in a change in social rules which govern young people's sexual behaviour, thus increasing the likelihood of STI transmission."

Young people aged between 15 and 29 continue to be significantly impacted by STIs in Adelaide, and engaging in prevention, testing and treatment presents a public health challenge. The crude infection rate in 2012 was 21.9 per 100,000 population, increasing to 74 per 100,000 population by 2017.

"Casual, and often condomless, sex initiated through the use of dating apps is emerging as a risk factor for STI transmission."

Dr. Miller says the changing epidemiology of gonorrhoea in Australia has highlighted the need for a detailed examination of the social and behavioural drivers of risky sexual behaviour.

"Gonorrhoea is a significant public health concern and better understanding of transmission networks is required, particularly as gonorrhoea in other jurisdictions has been shown to spread geographically and within and between sexual networks even with extensive public health interventions in place."

  2. The nearest thing to a workaround I've found is when I find a gallery pic by search to go to that users member gallery and hunt through it to find the pic, then right click and 'view image' for full size.

Doing 'view image' from search results only gives thumbnails. If you have to do it that way, holdinjg ctrl and hitting + zooms.

    ThunderHorse's gallery is golden, lol

  3. Thanks for pointing that out, when I started this thread Strictly Medicinal didnt have seeds!

And the trash sold on ebay turned out to be thistle seeds

By default I expect most ebay seeds to be fraudulent. You just have to look at whats offered: mushroom seeds, saffron seeds (saffron has never been capable of making seeds), seeds of rare and photoshoped hybrid roses and glow in the dark blue watermelons. Ebay seeds are always a gamble, and ebay seeds from asian sellers are always a bad gamble

Edit to mention the Centella asiatica seed I got from Strictly Medicinal were viable :)

...and naturally the ones from ebay were fraudulent.

  4. oops, lol

You may have hit a brief down time as work was being done, The old site will remain there as an archive so none of the old content will be lost.

The new forum is running pretty well. If any down time occurs it should only be brief.

  5. Our old sister site, the nook, is undergoing a long due overhaul.

In order to do the massive upgrade that it needs, and migrate to https encryption, the site is being restarted from scratch at a New Address.

On the 15th the old site will become a read only archive. Any nook members [or those who would like to be members] should register at the new site.

    :)

  6. Traditionally I've only seen this plant traded as clones. Lately there have been seeds on ebay, so I got some out of curiosity.

The seeds I got were obviously thistle seeds and didnt even remotely look like the seeds of a Polygonum, and I'm guessing that as usual all sellers on ebay are buying from the same source.

My question is, has anyone ever seen genuine seeds being sold? Or even produced on plants?

I've seen the seeds in botanical drawings so I know the plant produces them, even if it is generally propagated by cloning, but as with any very commercial and trendy plant its been hard to find any solid information on the plant itself.

A new short-term pilot study in children and teens 6-17 years old with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has shown saffron to be as effective at controlling symptoms as methylphenidate, the commonly prescribed drug Ritalin. Saffron may be a promising herbal alternative for treating ADHD, particularly for the 30% of patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate stimulants like methylphenidate, as reported in an article published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.

The article entitled "Crocus sativus L. Versus Methylphenidate in Treatment of Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomized, Double-Blind Pilot Study" was coauthored by Sara Baziar, MD, Ali Aqamolaei, MD and colleagues from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The researchers note that saffron also has anti-depressant and memory-enhancing properties. They compared the effects of Crocus sativus L. to methylphenidate in 54 patients over a 6-week period and showed no significant difference in effectiveness as well as similar frequency of adverse effects.

"This is a very interesting study and an intriguing finding. It is worthy of replication and further study to understand the mechanism of action," says Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology and President of the Child Mind Institute in New York.

Of course, in addition to larger confirmatory trials, a few questions remain. Such as is saffron as effective as methylphenidate, or is saffron as ineffective as methylphenidate?

    Still, interesting.

  8. Hunt around your area.

My area is geologically boring but I've still located deposits where I can harvest two distinctly different kinds of sand, gravel, shell, red stone, I even found talc and limestone deposits.

When a wind storm blew over an old tree by the river I found rocks the size of kiwis that I could crush into sand in my fist because of the decades of root exudates dissolving the stones support structure.

Mineral substrates surround us in fair variety, once we learn to see them.

  9. Yes.

Different species might be more or less sour and lemony and you might even find some with crunchy calcium oxalate druses, but all are technically edible.

And the reports of mescaline rich Opuntias are myths borne out of a quickly retracted typo, so you dont have to worry about turning the corner and being surprised by God ;)

  10. If your cacti are of a species rich in hordenine and devoid of illegal things you could brew, concentrate, adjust pH to 9.75 (hordenine is both an acid and a base), saturate in salt, extract the hordenine freebase with isopropanol, and purify/convert from there. It could be fun, at least.

Hordenine is used by the bodybuilder and nootropic types and the price seems to have been on the increase.

  11. Most nicotine is destroyed in combustion.

Conversely its very bioavailable by skin absorption or drinking the stuff.

Back when I grew it I would get anywhere from a very strong buzz to mild 'green tobacco sickness' just from handling the leaves and flowers of N. tabacum, N. rustica, or N. gossei and that was while I was a smoker.

Two drops of pure nicotine or one cigar has enough nicotine to kill a non-smoker if taken orally. Its one of the poisons the body can build a tolerance to, though.

You'll know if your being exposed to too much if it feels like you drank too much coffee, more exposure will result in increased restlessness, nervousness, as well as nausea. Thats as far as I ever got but things only get worse from there according to the literature. 'Green tobacco sickness' is the actual name of the illness caused by excessive skin exposure to tobacco plants, it happens a lot in growers and harvesters. It takes some minutes for the nicotine to fully soak in. If it feels like you drank coffee when you didnt, go wash with soap and stay away from the tobacco plants for a few hours.
