    do you have some pics there Karode13. still not game to eat these I have found here yet. they smell appetizing apart form the 1 or 2 I found in autumn with maggots in the base. it is recommended not to eat Chlorophyllums.. I have read some people have a allergic reaction to these? still like to know more about this Chlorophyllum brunneum,

    efficiency wise, for a small meal, not good. there is a lot of metal to heat before the you get water to boil.

    great size for mycology. if your looking to just cooking food with or without pressure it huge. would be good for pressure cooking 2 or 3 old roosters for months of stock or meat. great for pressure canning for a family. hard to say if its to big for cooking. 20 litres of soup or stew is a lot, or you could just half fill it.

    these mushrooms have shown up here again, Chlorophyllum brunneum I believe. spring I found 2. this autumn I have found a least 30. they appear just outside the laneway leading up to a dairy, no more than a meter away. they start of with a nice white cap with brown scales (sorry no pic at this stage). then the back ground colour changes to a more brown. as in these 2 pics, just a day apart. the colour of this back ground colour seems to correspond with spore load. the whiter the cap the more the more spores the cap is dropping (have taken prints at several stages). so the spore load seems to drop off long before the it matures and flattens out. the print is white. the ring (annulus) is attached and the stipe stains redish brown when cut. if I have mist identified this mushroom, please let me know. this year is the first I have come across this mushroom. there are some toxic in this group, hate to e wrong.

    got this a few weeks back. I don't usually these this big here or I find them to late. it was still hard as a rock. so I drop some on a agar plate, and ate the rest. now it looks like this.

    i am glad this strain is floating about here. thanks for the heads up here bigred. the first person who commits to starting up a culture i will commit to buy. even if its month or longer down the track. i totally understand the time, energy and prep it takes for culture. to go through all this just for 1 culture is madness. if you are plan to do agar in future i am happy to wait..

    a new stropharia isolate nice, I will give it a try.. got a mate who does trimming a chipping as part of his job. I could be johnny apple seed with this one. agaricus langei yes as well. got several big bags of well made compost here that I swapped for 2 trays of portobellos. I got the best end of the deal here, no sweat. I will PM

    yes there very nice smelling, but not as intense as the SW vic mushrooms. maybe its the volcanic sand soil, I don't know?. I have never been able to describe the aroma as almonds, to me they smell like mushrooms. that sounds simple, but I grew up with the smell of field mushrooms. I need to buy some almonds next time in town. raw or roasted? yep, they create a instant apatite along with the memory's of my childhood. found a heap of yellow stainers few days back, that phenol smell was very distinct. yuck

    got this mature specimen in a irrigated cow paddock on a raise section of soil. maybe 3-4 days after rain. showing no scales. a week later got several of these, veil just separating some scaling. nice red staining. now 3 week almost without rain found these breaking through a hard clay track. a little dehydrated. stained reddish brown colour. the 2 bottom pics are arvenis I'm guessing. no were near aromatic, here in the N central vic, as the mushroom from SW Victoria. im printing all these. hope to get to the SW soon. one day I will get a microscope. there is a brown capped one here, that should come up the next good rain or two.

    200 Agaricus in Australia, holy crap, that's mind blowing. how many are these are edible? or how many of these, people call horse or field mushroom? I can remember some 40 years ago as a young boy picking Agaricus mushrooms for the Footscray market. we had all the locals into it. I can never forget the aroma of the shed we packed in. this was the south west Victoria, these mushrooms were famous back then in the market. it all ended when mushroom farmers, who put the fear and dangers of picking wild mushrooms to, who ever regulated these things? back then. in the peek of the season we would send 300-400 cases 2 to 3 times a week. them were the good old days.

    you could cover the ground with bird wire. or there is a old biodynamic recipe I read about long time ago. first you catch some mice skin them (dead mice) burn the skins mix the ash with sand to make easy spreading spread around the borders of the grain crop. apparently the mice think the crop has been burnt and don't go there?

    thanks for thought it maybe bacteria. I got lucky on the second transfer using a glove box and got the mould out. but I did go a third to be sure.

    can anyone identify the 3rd contaminate on this plate. I have never seen before. next to the bottom wedge taken. its a white slimy bit of something? when I took the transfer several day before I did not notice it.

    looking for ganoderma lucidum

    I am on the hunt for reishi after some clown gave me oyster instead. I got a whole heap cultures of this guy for free. spent a lot of time a effort cleaning up, put to slants, growing on grains then sawdust for some, making up substrates. I am relative new to this mycology stuff so its been a very demanding task learning as I go. none of these cultures, I got had the mycelial characteristics that I had read or looked at. then when grown on grain, non had the fragrance that matched the said mushroom. well I should have stop there, but I didn't. now I have some 30 bags of 5 different mushrooms ready to fruit that I have to split up into different growing conditions, just to try to fruit so I can see what they maybe. my nightmare began when cheeking , what I thought was reishi now i have what looks like blue oyster pins everywhere. I should have twigged back when on agar or a least the smell when on grain. musty, mealy, not sweet, not pleasant does not mean sweet fragrant, and pleasant. F F I feel stupid now, and the time I wasted. well life must go on and forward. all I can do is fruit these and order some more reishi from china. i don't see any the others being reishi, because none have what i would describe as musty, mealy, not sweet, not pleasant. so any reishi culture or spores has anyone to sell. or any other edible cultures or prints for sale. (good chance to make some money someone) i am really keen to get a collection together i love growing mushrooms its almost become a religion to me. got some ulmarius and shitake almost ready to pick, so the last few month are not in vain. have a happy equinox everyone.

    all year round spawn incubator

    very happy with the set and forget of this setup. with 2 of these thermostats- they are very well calibrated. (have tested 4 of these together) one controlling the cold and the other controlling the heat, I have been able to keep the temp within 1 oC either side of 25 oC. my spawn room has been from 15 oC early morn to 31 oC evening.

    all year round spawn incubator

    i needed a incubator that wasnt going to climb in temprature as the room temperature climbed beyond the ideal. i already had a old fridge with a thermostat and heat lamp that warmed my cultures. now i just needed to cool them. the project worked great, so i thought i would share. started with a broken old fridge that was delivered to my door with two others for 20 bucks. it cost money for people to dump these at the tip, so they got a great deal and me to. this is thermostat i use on all my incubators, also has a cooling mode. they are cheep, accurate, and reliable and will handle 2000w if needed. for the cooling I am using 2x 60w peltier plates 6amp each(add 12v and one side produces -30℃ the other 70℃) sandwiched between 2x alum cooling blocks. a thermo conductive paste is used between each face of the peltier plate and the cooling block. 2X mini 12v water pumps draws the heat from one side and the cold from the other. i have a 50ltr bucket of water out side, with pump1 in it. and a 4-5 ltr bucket in the top of the freezer part with pump2. the pump in the freezer bucket pumps the water to the cooler on top of the fridge, then goes to the heat exchanger (mini radiator) then back into the bucket. the fan pushes the cold air down into the back of fridge section. the air returns up though the front of the fridge section. today the room temp was at 33c and the fridge kept a nice 19c.   the left of the fridge is up against the inside of a outside wall of a weather board house. my guess is, the wall would be easy 42c+. will test with a non-contact termometer tomorrow. have a small aircon in the room to keep it down because i have calocybe indica growing in grow tent and more spawn in the other fridges.

    sliced, dipped in egg, then rolled in flour mixed with Tuscan seasoning, then fried in olive oil, really YUM. had some in a spag sauce tonight, was good too.

    just a, amazing looking block of mushrooms. impressive wanted to grow nameko for some time now. they say that they are one of the tastiest mushrooms, is this so?.

    getting to the end of my Calocybe indica grow. really impressed me this mushroom. here is my last crop just before picking the most productive bag the biggest mushroom I had one crop take 38+c temps in the colonizing, pinning and fruiting, and did not blink a eye. under 30c it does slow down a bit in fruiting. I've given it a new name for myself, the summer mushroom. it is one tough mutha of a mushroom in summer. going to give it a try next year in some outdoor beds covered in plastic and shade cloth.

    Natural Pesticides

    neem is the only pesticide I have used for years. caterpillars of all sorts, aphids, mites, cucumber beetles and earwigs. it has a anti-feeding effect on insects, so they either starve to death or die of dehydration. I've seen green and black aphids die in a day from dehydration on a warm day. be careful don't spray on hot days especially seedlings, it will burn. it has many other uses for animals, such as repelling fly's ticks mites mosquitoes and many more. not recommended for lactating animals read some were? I recon you could find a hundred uses for this stuff. its meant to be a noxious weed in the tropics.???

    grain moisture content?

    I have good success with wheat and have stuck with it. here my method. to fill 4 1/2 gallon jars. I use 2.75 cups of wheat. wash the wheat clean and add good tbl spoon of gypsum and soak 24 hrs.. this partly hydrates the grain. heat to simmer point (in the soak water, add more if needed). stir every few minutes to keep the heat even. after 5 min simmering start checking the grain, by splitting one between thumb nail and finger. grains that are not fully hydrated will still have dry flour inside. keep cooking till this just disappears or just before. if your grains are uneven in size, cook till 95% have hydrated. you can see by looking at the grain, it has a whiteness to it. now you have full hydrated wheat. now the surface water needs to be removed drain into a sieve and while still hot, flip over and over till no more steam comes off. this is my perfect wheat spawn. no split grains, shakes up easy, colonizes well. if you get the inside of the grain right and totally dry the outside you cant go wrong. put foil over the top off the jars and check for cracks in the jars and all should be good. wheat is what I do know, now what I don't know. while we are on the subject of grain moisture. that is budgie mix, mainly millet. (hope I am not hijacking this thread) keeping this going on grain moisture. the method I am trying first is soaking the bird mix 12hrs then spinning off the excess moisture in a washing machine spinner in a mesh bag or spun around by arm in a fine mesh bag by arm to remove surface moisture, then presser cooking. any other ideas on millet, please help.

    Edible/Medicinal culture seeking thread

    I only have other shiitake on plates at the moment and enoki that I just cloned (they are just starting to move and may take several transsfers). I am working on growing shiitake on straw this year, the 75 strain is what others are using to achieve this. the shiitakes I have, I selected from a heap I grew from prints and they proven to be vigorous a fruit well. I have straw in the agar (pre-adapting) and almost ready to go on grain with straw. and I do have another calocybe indica slant to spare. probably no good to anyone now that we are heading into cooler weather.
