I'm no expert on this but I think some plants are just more inclined to shoot ariel roots. I've also heard that it may have to do with underwatering or or possibly b/c the pot is root bound.

Albino and variegated traits in Trichocereus seedlings
CactEye replied to Stillman's topic in Cacti & Succulents
Thanks Berenger, I had mine in the same spot for most of it's short life. I moved it to another spot a few days before it died. It may have gotten a little more sun in the new spot and that may have been what did it. I had also just recently watered the peres it was grafted to, so that could have been the cause also. This was my first success at grafting a small seedling, so I wasn't real sure how to take care of it. I hadn't given it much water and was waiting a week or so after the soil dried to water again. This past time I think I watered sooner. It developed a black spot on top which slowly over a 24 hour period withered to nothing. Cool thing is, there is a next time! -
Albino and variegated traits in Trichocereus seedlings

Great thread! I've had a bunch of albino seedlings pop up from a certain lumberjack cross. I believe it was LJ x ss02/01. I'm not a very skilled grafter, but managed to save one of them. It grew for about a month or two and started turning black one day and died. Not sure what caused it, but perhaps too much humidity. Quite a sad day indeed, but I still have some seeds left and will be trying this again soon. Here's a pic of her before she bit it. Those are some great looking cacti guys! Jox-it's cool to see what my albino might have become. Looking forward to more updates edit for better picture -
Thanks mutant! You have some lovely cacti indeed!

Thanks for the post Philocacti! I am fairly new here, but I've met some really awesome and generous people here so far. In all honesty, I had lost a good amount of faith in humanity b/c most people I meet in life seem very self centered. The people that I speak of would never think to give away or even pay money to gift something to a stranger. Kindness and generosity seem to be quite common with cacti folks and it has changed my perception of people as a whole. I suppose I just wanted to say that it's really awesome to know there are good people out there in the world, and even better that I'm getting to know some of them. Zelly has been super nice to me, as well as just about everyone else that I've met that grows cacti. Here's a big ol cheers to everyone on here and I hope to get to know some of you better.
