Here are my first efforts at grafting... lophophora var caespitosa on to Trichocereus Pachanoi (possibly a hybrid crossed with Peruvianus)... This one grafted onto a Trich that I grew from seed. This one went very well...

The loph is going well...

It was too big in it's half hot water cylinder container to shift so I tried to keep the greenhouse humid while the graft took. For downward pressure I placed a small piece of bicycle handlebar tape over it and wrapped bait elastic (thin elastic thread available at all good fishing shops) over it and around the spines on the rootstock over and over to get what I thought was the correct downward pressure. I didnt take any pics of it (I did video the procedure but cant find the vid, I'll update when it turns up) but it looked a bit like these ones although these dont have the handlebar tape mentioned above...

One made it... One did not... But before it expired I took two pups that had grown on it in it's death throes to do these tall grafts...

It's a caespitosa. The growth rate has been alarming and appears to be accelerating. 10 November - 21 December...

Ive found a couple and are trying to secure them now. If I can manage it, I'll get propagating and there will be boobies for all, eventually...

While although I would, naturally, never do anything illegal... I have heard that people importing seeds and live cacti into NZ have rarely had their parcels opened, even when marked "seeds" and "horticultural supplies". This may depend on where the package comes from and of course if you have some sort of "red flag" by your name. I've not heard of anyone actually prosecuted for say, importing a few loph seeds... But I imagine if customs found something like cannabis (marijawana) seeds it would be a different story.

anyone have any experience with Blossfeldia Liliputana
dawnbeaver replied to myco's topic in Cacti & Succulents
A few weeks later and there are a lot of tiny green dots. They seem easy enough to germinate but are incredibly tiny. I'm trying to have the moisture level in the sealed container just moist enough to support life in the hope that they wont get root rot. I read somewhere that it was possible to grow them on a porous rock, pumice I assume. Anyone heard of that method? -
I'd like a breast cactus as well. Just emailed kadas garden about this... http://kadasgarden.com/KRBB0053.html

As at 2 Dec, the closest inspection reveals a single minute green dot. We have life... -

Wow that looks awesome. I removed twelve pups from it, leaving three. I'll leave it like that for now and see what happens...

Photos taken of another graft... 15 days between pics...

It's one of my favourite cacti so I'm a little nervous about leaving the pups on but you are right, it will be interesting to see what happens, so I'll leave them, for now at least...
-
Thats what I thought. But the top is growing very well, I might leave them, see what happens and perhaps graft more cacti on the pups when they are big enough. The rootstock was grown from seed, it's not a cutting, I dont know if that makes a difference to anything though.

Astrophytum and Gymnocalycium seedlings...

This rootstock has grown pups all around it's base...
