Growing under artificial conditions.
Idon'tstudydinosaurs replied to Idon'tstudydinosaurs's topic in Ethnobotany
I havn't got a large collection (brugs, khat, lophs etc.) but I'm expecting some more soon so I was just interested in the different ways people combat growing plants in climates that are not favorable to the plant. For example, I'm hoping to grow psychotria and caapi but down south it neither gets too warm or humid. I'm not really referring to particular plants, just curious as to how people make plants happy in climates that are not favorable =]. -

Cheers bigred, will have to find out some more ideas and see how involved i want it to be. Those are some wicked ideas shonman. I havent got the greatest amount of space so i was thinking a largish glass tank with some grow lights a small heater, fan and humidifier, all of which is connected to a control box which is preset to certain humidity and temperature. Is there someone in Aus. That specialises in this sort of equipment? I did a quick google search but most of it is too large a scale for what i need. -

Yeah I had a read of some but I want to know about being able to create a full microclimate for particular plants to induce optimum growing conditions. Anyone tried it? -

Thermoline.com.au/plantgrowth Bit overkill for a backyard but if I had lots of money I would get one aha. Can only wish. -

Yeah I would love a large terrarium setup that is temperature/humidity/light controllable for those fussy plants. Ive had an aquaponics setup with trout before, unfortunately I'm renting at the moment so it's not viable. Although your container idea sounds sweet. I would love to be able to imitate ideal conditions so that I don't have to worry about if theres too much sun or temperature or not enough humidity etc. -

Cheers eatfoo. Yeah if I did order plants I would make sure soil was omitted. Down where I am in the Fitzgerald Biosphere theres a heap of endemic native plants. Be a shame if I was contributed to their demise. -

Yeah right, cheers for the responses. I might just start with the seeds for now. When I get a bit more knowledge I'll try the plant thing. -
I want to print that out, frame it and put it on my wall.

Cheers for your responses. If most people in W.A. haven't had many issues then I assume I will be okay too. -
Man I totally missed this one. If theres absolutely ANYTHING left I would be ecstatic to get some!

Haha cheers. If the seeds are found do they just get destroyed or is there a penalty to the buye/purchaser? I know about the quarantine species list but realistically it means shit if seeds are from a private collection. There most likely not going to be treated as quarantine requests for seed to be imported into Australia. A kind person has offered to send (free of charge) my cat's uncle some N rustica seeds, but the seeds are in NZ. A wise decision or not, if theyre in a simple envelope? -
How long for Brugmansia arborea seed to emerge?
Idon'tstudydinosaurs replied to Idon'tstudydinosaurs's topic in Ethnobotany
Cheers thed. The datura seeds are straight from the plant so I'm more confident with these. The brug seeds have only been in for three weeks so there is still hope; wishful thinking probably. -
I have the seeds in seed raising mix, keeping them moist. The seeds are barely covered (I've heard they need sunlight to germinate). It's been about 2 weeks and they haven't emerged. Should I cover in plastic to increase humidity or am I just being impatient?

Idon'tstudydinosaurs replied to Idon'tstudydinosaurs's topic in Ethnobotany
Yeah I'm still waiting for them to emerge *sigh* They were from eBay after all, so maybe not fresh enough. I ended up just buying a couple Brug hybrids and the guy gave me some fresh triple purple datura seeds so fingers crossed. -

Anuthing really. Williamsii, psychotria, ephedra, nicotiana, caapi etc. I wouldnt mind just giving someone $ to put together a mix. What have you got? -
First attempt at grafting loph.
Idon'tstudydinosaurs replied to Idon'tstudydinosaurs's topic in Cacti & Succulents
Fingers crossed. I used the rooted bottom halves of the lophs and tried grafting them as well. There are areoles on them so I don't see why not. -
Brug. leaves wilting on the ends.
Idon'tstudydinosaurs replied to Idon'tstudydinosaurs's topic in Ethnobotany
Cheers gerbil. You have been infinitely helpful to my lack of knowledge with Brug growing. Yeah I probably went overboard with the pellets. Again, I have an uncanny ability of killing with kindness. Cheers LokStok, no obvious sign of caterpillars. I will take some pellets out and keep an eye on it. I'm glad I have this community to come to for help, without it I'd be killing plants left right and centre. Hopefully one day I can be the one to pass on the advice. -
Hi all, I've just noticed my Brug's leaves have started wilting on the ends. Any suggestions? Cheers.

Cheers gerbil. I'm down south at the moment so I'm not too worried about the warm weather (we're having maximum of 20 at the moment). I put some blood and bone on it yesterday and applied some seasol as well. I'll put it in the greenhouse and keep an eye on it. If it is mites what can I use to remedy it?
