Eggplant graft and does anyone know a Solanum plant that lives long
gr33ntea replied to gr33ntea's topic in Ethnobotany
I don't do fruit trees but they should be easier cause my succulent-soft eggplant stalks dehydrate so quickly! But people do graft different variety of apple on the same tree I am going to try a lemon graft on my orange tree. Just make sure they are in the same family Me too, i spent hours on this list of Solanum, looking for a tree like plant and then googling for its lifespan and then googling if it was poisonous or not, like doxneed2c-me said " I have heard people using the root of a Datura to graft a tomato stalk to and they found there was alkaloids in the tomatoes. " I use wedge type grafting because for me it is the easiest, often the eggplant is small, succulent and fragile and the stock i am grafting to is most often hard so i try to squeeze it in. And then their is the moisture loss, i haven't tried but i believe other types of grafting would be hard because of this. However i want to try bark grafting as shown here http://www.wikihow.com/Graft-a-Tree -

I use a wedge type of graft, exactly like in the picture. I usually use two eggplants for one of the rootstock, i make a cut in the middle and shove the rootstock in, make sure their outer skin is touching the outer skin of the rootstock cause that is where mostly like the vasular rings touch each other I tape it up tightly and then i apply wood glue to the top of the graft to seal it. If i don't seal it then moisture will escape and the graft will fail. I have found that woodglue kinda sucks, sometimes it doesnt work properly so i am going to try beeswax gel to seal the wound. This video was useful for me Everyone i know uses this plant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanum_torvum but its lifespan is only around 5-6 years i have heard. I want something that will last a very long time. I spent like 3 hours last time going through this list of different solanum plants and looking for a good grafting stock species that lives long and is a large fat grafting stock http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanum -

They may be exactly the same? Do you know its life expectancy? I bought some woodglue, i am going to use that as a moisture sealant, will see how it goes -
Can you confirm these seedlings please
gr33ntea posted a question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
1. Apparently these are Scop X Phych0 seedlings (looks a lot like spachianus 2. And these are unknown seeds i got as a gift from a guy called Juke Adro, over at shroomery -
It is kinda see through. To be honest it doesnt look like it will survive unless i graft it. My question is how long should i leave it on its own roots before i graft it? Can it survive off the energy of the seed it came through?

It is certainly not soft! I suspect it will die. Oh well.
-
I suspected it would die, the far right, is it variegated? It is certainly doing well and healthy

I think it is a clover, this beautiful plant with tiny leaves has been growing on the side of my house for 20 years

I have no idea how this happened. A friend gave me a cactus for grafting, the graft was successful but the scion died from black rot that turned its inside to mush. Now a cactus next to it (the one in pictures) has started to rot, They are in the shade, it couldn't have been the sun. I cut it out and then applied sulphur. Also, sould i just cut it off? I cut all around it, can it still receive nutrients?

I grafted a loph williamsi var. huizache on the san pedro stock. I sprayed bug spray around the cacti stock. Although my san pedro stock survived it looks worse than Palestine and very ugly. I will word my post better next time

Just found the answer from another thread. Thanks.

Well FUDGE! THanks guys! SO it was the ready to spray insect killer. Goddammit, i was actually going to spray everything with it to ward off fungus gnats and caterpillar. You can't learn without making mistakes. DOes anyone know of any cactus friendly insect spray?
-
Lmao, Sure why not, all in the name of science and enriching the SAB community I'll do it to a prickly pear.
-
I just remembered i sprayed it with Mortein natureguard spray But i doubt that had anything to do with it

I just have some peat there cause i didnt know where to throw it. It is a soil mixture. Well i guess i should cut it off after watching that informative video. Thanks Zelly Gtarman are you suggesting i move it to the full sun? The soil if anything was actually dry, this happened to me before but the sun did it so i thought they would be safe in the shade. Plus i got some grafts on them

Second picture: That there is a very nice crest sir, you be extra careful and graft it to the fattest pc pach you can find. Trust me it will be worth it. Any fat columnar cactus with wide spacious vascular ring I would start grafting the smaller ones to anything i can find. What kinda stock you got lying around?

Will these upside down lophophora-no-aerole grafts ever grow?
gr33ntea posted a topic in Cacti & Succulents
I made these grafts of seedlings on pereskiopsis. THey are the upside down part of seedling. They have gotten a bit fat but compared to the top-side grafts they havent grown at all, some of them not at all. Will they ever grow? -
The one i had in the soil.... it died, i messed it up somehow. i put in poor soil, so no control group, but i took measurements so I can see how much it grew.
-
How about vermiculite? Cause i got so much of that.

Ok then i will try that. Thing is it would take so long for the seedling to grow until i can cut it in a way that both sides have aeroles. -

So even with no aerole, it will grow eventually? -
Originally i had a loph on the pc pach, but the graft failed so i tried it again with a tiny spach graft that had a variegated astro aerole graft on it
