  1. OMG you are a legend and I adore you I'd noticed some benefits with insufflation and LongCOV inflammation symptoms at a party last year, the details of which were sketchy af but the LongCOV inflammation reduction lingered for a few days well beyond the expected effects and I put that down to dopaminergic activity as anti-inflammatory as well as some expected minor anaesthesia ;) . Most of my remaining longCOV symptoms are nerve and cranial and when having a setback it feels like my nose and eyes are under pressure I'd be interested to see how it goes. Or try some at 1/4 of the dose you recommend ( dilute bottle? ) as I respond strongly to BDNF enhancing compounds Love your work there, you rock

    TGA - FOI disclosure log

Well, yes, kinda sorta, inasmuch as I'm glad somebody is keeping tabs on it. I've bookmarked it in my head Socially tho, we are all so inured to the concept of rich kents getting what they want anywhere they like, regardless of fairness, risks to the environment, public health, regardless of public scrutiny, that it all seems like so much business as usual. Yes this is fucked. So are all the gag orders. I've even self censored my response here, not including various jabs about well never mind The future is not evenly distributed. 25 years ago we thought we were charting a path but capitalism eats all your dreams
  3. Thank you my friend, your work is thorough and inspiring. Looking forward to more Mammillaria work when I get these cultures back up and running <3

    covid 19 vaccination

Dunno if you've noticed, but it's not just your justice that's being sidelined. Going to a GP these days is a lottery, very few winners, lots of lazy diagnosis and being sent home and told you're imagining it. Or worse, drug seeking- even when you haven't asked for drugs. It'll get your appointment terminated straight up and go on your record for future appointments IMO it's a major contributor to Australia having a high rate of chronic illness. Nobody bothers to investigate until you're almost dead I do believe vax injury is a thing, but so is longCOV. There are no perfect answers yet. Hope your symptoms vanish fast and you can heal

Ta mate, that's good to know!

Laminar flow hood coming up for auction

I checked link a minute ago- it was described as untested and possibly incomplete/ not working. Width and weight dimensions were not added- the units are really heavy, so unless you're picking it up in person you could be up for a motza in freight. Could be smaller than you think. You could be up for a new HEPA filter at least, I'd test it with MEA or LBA plates once you get it home Bid with caution, wouldn't be the first time any of us have bought a pig in a poke Nice find tho, those Gelman units are corkers and go for years if they're looked after
  7. I can't keep up with you mate, I'll have to digest this later. Still going through your lovely Azo paper and looking at replicating it alongside some new variables here nom...nom nom :D Such lovely work, thank you Definitely needs cooking but, and I wonder if that has an effect on medicinal value? Yeah I've been wondering the same. If there are easily made anni-d extracts that bypass the oxalates that'd be cool tho. I'd still like to know the difference between cooked and raw for potential supplementation to the same effect tho- I'd rather cook a feed occasionally than harvest a bunch to extract
  8. Yeah mine is taking off too, given how soggy and mouldy the local climate can be here I thought it would be doomed Na, it's loving life, third set of new leaves I think Hillbilly, be good to do side by side TLCs to compare climate, season and propagation mix differences over time to complement Alchemica's work, what do you reckon?
  9. How awesome this is makes me really happy Lovely work my friend. So much happiness for its beauty If youse haven't already read it, can definitely recommend Thank you for sharing
  10. Morning lovely human. @Alchemica I so admire your work, you're a champion mate and that's an understatement <3 Beautiful work, thank you for posting it here Would it be possible to get reference compounds for molecules of interest? I know they're hell exxy, but is it possible? Or can you get reliability via the rf without them?

    GARDEN STATES - Ethnobotanical Conference - Dec 2-4 2022

Oh Oh Oh I just got back And I can't emphasise enough how excellent it was. So. Much. Good. Solid. Science. Had been pondering the creation of a dedicated space so ppl specifically interested in pure research could hole up in a corner and talk about lab stuff. Turns out it wasn't needed, everywhere I went there were two or three researchers hanging round who were happy to chat and teach I caught up with @Yeti101 ( I'm up to hang out before the next one ). I met @FancyPants. I caught up with the Hillbillys. I met a new bunch of lovely people I'd never heard of til EGA, I saw absolute shedloads of very dear old friends and colleagues who I only ever see at EGAs Ran a workshop, helped out at another, had some great yarns with crew at the afterparty. Didn't see a single presentation yet.I figure that's what streaming is for :D If I wanted to go to your presentation it really meant I hoped I'd catch you in the lobby, which was usually the case Was gifted many many significant items to help me on the research path ( if you're on here, you know who you are but do you know how grateful we all are this end? ) and a couple of brilliant books Ate all the food in Melbourne including some very dodgy salmon pieces from Woolies and everything but that was perfect And can't thank the EGA crew enough. I love youse all, seriously, it's still like Xmas for me

    GARDEN STATES - Ethnobotanical Conference - Dec 2-4 2022

Also. Ronny asked me to give this thread some love How do I do that? Youse already know I love em all like crazy Mind you a few of us are sorely tempted to set up a Lab Rat Lounge somewhere outside so all the recalcitrant science nerds can find each other without using human language. A bit too close to conference for such a great idea, and maybe it isn't a great idea, cos one of the best parts of EGA is the random mingling and connections made @Yeti101 I'm so hoping to see you there and have a chance to catch up properly I still remember you doing that coffee run in 2019 for me, a bunch of undercaffeinated EGA staff is a fearful thing that was champion Anyone else going to the after party? Go to the afterparty! Even if you don't make the conference, you can't make the conference, save yourselves some heartbreak, pretend you went to the conference and have a dance as well. $15 at the door or $10 if you book in advance at https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/967878

    GARDEN STATES - Ethnobotanical Conference - Dec 2-4 2022

Oh mates, it's nearly conference time, the org team is running round like a bunch of cats with their hair on fire. But really, there's nothing they can't handle. They rock. There's gunna be a good core of serious science geeks attending too, and there is always always always a good chance to connect with new friends and old Tickets from the Garden States site are nearly sold out. There have been a few places I've seen tickets being sold privately in various FB groups. Which is great, we hate seeing people miss out on such an amazing event If you are selling an EGA ticket privately you need to advise EGA so the new ticket owner's name appears on the ticket. If you've sold your ticket privately contact [email protected] and advise them of the name of the new ticket holder If you're buying a private ticket- make sure you have a copy of that ticket with your name on it I advise paying for private tix sales via Paypal or similar so there's a chain of communication For ticketing and other general conference information, see: https://gardenstates.org/faq-2/

Hey Yeti I hope we get a chance to catch up properly this time! I remember you giving me a hand with the coffee run at the last one but I got called away after that and promised myself I'd see you at the next one :)

    Possum eating Ca tha

Lol, I have the opposite problem- wallabies stripping branches of young NL trees, bending down and breaking thicker vertical stems and ultimately killing the trees Weirdly enough not the largest, oldest tree- they don't touch that, maybe it's too exposed But I planted another six a couple of years back in more sheltered areas- they've never thrived and that's prolly the reason another old tree has never thrived either. One of the young ones is 2m high and completely stripped up to about 1.2m Totally deliberate IMO- nothing nearby targeted. Explains why I don't see as many dead wallabies out the front these days, they're all hyped up and hopping faster ;)

    GARDEN STATES - Ethnobotanical Conference - Dec 2-4 2022

Not missing this for the world Is the one chance I have every few years to catch up with so many lovely old friends and colleagues all at once, talk plants and nobody gets bored, and hang out with Kaz at the bookstore Caine, Jess and I will be running practical workshops, which is always a lovely synergy If you've never been to an EGA before they are *famously* welcoming. No need worry about feeling shy. There's room for everyone<3

What is your least favourite plant?

That was one of my contributions All of my plant prejudices stem from unpleasant associations with really unpleasant people. Coleus is a shame, because someone I really like is a Coleus fan, but it's not strong enough to overwrite years of aversion as Coleus were also the favourite genus of a really racist old relative of mine. Every time I see a Coleus i want to kick it in the head The reasons people dislike some species or genus are as interesting to me as the name of the species themselves Cool thread @niggles

Caine and Ronny- thorough and as brilliant and properly local as always Love your work guys Still have a few vids from the series I must catch up on tho, a treat for the cold nights

A plant I got from SAB - any idea?

Was thinking that too. Compare with other pics, the one in Wikipedia has darker leaves but a lot of others show same colouring as the one above https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justicia_pectoralis
  21. TL:DR I always thought the tyramine/ aged cheese/ dieta thing was shaky til now, having read both sides and never experienced any issues prior since forever. Now I'm a believer Posting here so I don't spam the shit out of my mates. It's still happening, albeit at a lower level, and I'm super relaxed and everything seems like a good idea. After this I'll step away from all the keyboards before I start posting love letters on 4chan or something else godawful Been slaving over a hot spreadsheet for over a week ( queue tiny violins ). While I'm completely absorbed in computer stuff, my go to food is cheaparse Aldi Stilton, leafy greens and whatever fruit's in the garden. For days. In this case a week. A tiny stinky block of Aldi Stilton can last for days and there''s no washing up and it's brain food for spreadsheets Pressed Send on the spreadsheet. Wandered about feeling residually wired for a coupla hours and it was pissing me off, because Job Done, validated, tick, right? Had some 5HTP. Didn't measure it. Prolly a bit more than I should have, and would normally have- but not *that* much more. But when I've done that in the past all that happens is I get a bit anxious then it wears off and I'm all relaxed like it says on the box At +1 hour in things get weird. I think it was an hour, but it was getting weird so we'll call it +1 hour. I can't remember what the initial symptoms were because I'm not back yet. Mostly classic hiatus hernia I think, I looked it up. Old people thing. Burping, dizziness, feeling of fullness. Yeah, so I put it down to that. I'm old, bits of me recovering from whatever the fuck I had last year. That. 5HTPs never been an issue ever before At +1.5 hours I'm lying down wondering if someone has messed with my 5HTP container. And even I am not that stupid. And all my guests are awesome. It's looking incredibly serotonergic in here, but it's not your classic serotonergic. Temperature is constant. No change in heart rate. There are waves of...serotoninishness tho. Flickery visual disturbances are making me want to close my eyes. Scrolling Facebook on the laptop is even more of a physical nightmare than usual because visual disturbances. Is less worse if I stop scrolling down webpages or switching between tabs. But the effect isn't quite...drukgs. It's just not that sparkly for the level of physical discomfort either. The only thing I can think of is 5HTP. Must be a novel reaction now I'm old Ride it out. Feel like total shit, dog is getting worried etc. Doesn't feel life threatening, so no hospital. Mostly cos I do not want to go to hospital and tell them I took something that wasn't drugs but feel like it's a serotonergic response to 5HTP. That shit never ends well. And not quiiiite bad enough for the ambos yet. But no fun and getting slowly worse At +2 hrs approx it dawns on me that activated charcoal might help. Sop it up maybe. Swill a spoonful down in H2O and feel better At 2.5 hours I don't feel better enough, so I mung another spoonful in water and lay back down At +3 hours I had to stand up suddenly. I will never get the Stilton out of the curtains and the bathroom looks like it's been vandalised by a psychopathic goth teenager. Wall to wall charcoal But once I recognised the Stilton it all made sense- tyramine. Fuck I've heard of the MAOI response, but this is ridiculous. It was 4 hrs since my last Stilton hit before I took the 5HTP. What am I, made of fucking glass or something? Needed a couple more AC solutions between then and now, but the worst of it is gone The moral of the story is: Sometimes internetty things are true, for some people. And always keep human grade activated charcoal in your kitchen pantry. I don't have a kitchen pantry, but if I did that's where I'd keep it. Listen to your Elders. Not me tho, I'm still a little shaky. Often there is a reason for The Things. Like not eating the tops of Kava plants, and being careful about your food when anticipating ceremony. Those people know their shit, much respect I had to open the fridge ten minutes ago and the fucking Stilton is still in there and I was like a vampire at sunrise. This is gunna go on for a while I think. Even the smell... Feel heaps better tho.
  22. Yeah, I put it down to being dopamine depleted as well Also checked out the fridge this morning to grab brekky and every damn thing in there is full of tyramine. Stilton's apparently one of the highest tyramine cheeses tho, but every bloody thing in there is high tyramine Like some kind of weird legal binge lol Your experience sounds way scarier, glad you came out alright too Hard to tell if it was an hypertensive crisis, my BP is damn low and I couldn't remember how to use the toy that measures it at the time. HR was a guess but wasn't racing. GI symptoms were minor and transient, relatively speaking, if somewhat colourful. Fuck nose what would have happened without the charcoal tho. And I'm not up for more research, my guinea pig days are done :D Thinking about the dieta link, has anyone else concluded that it might be for the benefit of the practitioner as much as the participant? If you're looking after a circle very carefully, especially for ppl you don't know well, the last thing you need is to suddenly require all your attention diverted to one or two people experiencing a significant but totally avoidable somatic crisis like the above. And I'd hate to be the person who needed that attention Feeling good now, thanks for all the messages tho, happy festivus you crazy loving botanists. Spent yesterday on a digital detox with some mates and everything feels more balanced
  23. Also, the above may not be funny. I'm not in a position to judge right now If it isn't funny, I hope it's informative and useful for someone. If it is neither funny or useful, this is Chillspace but I may have massively misjudged the last few hours, so yeah, sorry

Alistair McTaggart + Caine Barlow on Australian Psilocybe

Oh gord, it just finished. And was absolutely brilliant. Serious in-depth genetics parts too I need to rewatch @Freakosystem I hope you get a chance to check it out Hopefully the whole thing goes viral at some point. EGA webcasts just keep getting better and deserve a heaps wider audience Nick W Macguyvered the whole thing brilliantly as always

I am so definitely looking forward to this. Caine always explains things elegantly and thoroughly so they're pretty much in reach for everyone. And Dr McTaggart is the man with the golden ticket Thanks EGA crew, love yer work
