  1. It's megadodgy, yet incredibly prevalent everywhere including SAB- to offer any kind of legal advice until you have *at least* read the legislation or have relevant experience.

If you must reply before doing this, could you at least put up a disclaimer near the top of your post which says something like "It is my understanding that"... instead of presenting limp views on whatever it is you think will only happen to bad people, or people who are dobbed in, or who you know LEOs overlook if they're not having a bad hair day etc

And after 14+ years of SAB existence, you can bet that there are a few legality posts which aren't there any longer because the plaintiff has requested that they be removed before trial. Some of which contained similarly stupid or inaccurate replies

The signal/noise ratio on legal questions is heavily weighted on statements like those above.

More than enough to lull some poor fool into thinking 'maybe it will be OK' when it may in fact be OK, but not in the state they're residing in, or subsequent to the date of amendment to relevant State legislation

  2. Bribery! It works!

Have something to offer the people who bring you cut logs, like something simple and easy for them to use. Inoculated bags ready to fruit or grow-on etc.

If there is a crew who works regularly in your area and who know their trees it is a perfect symbiotic relationship- they'll have you on speed dial when something interesting comes up

( In the olden days, the standard practice was a case of beer, but with so many people not drinking these days, and workplace practices being weird about the presence of alcohol and heavy machinery, beer is not always the safe bet it once was )

  3. how's the rural fire service going? I imagine your sharp wits and open mind would be a great asset to the service.

Edited, because I was whingey whingey whingey and your thread is too excellent to hijack

  4. Ah rigger, you're a conundrum, glad you're here. I still think your comments about welfare recipients generally suck tho. It's like comparing all people who drink alcohol to the very visible and off-planet alcoholic singing loudly on the corner and swigging metho from a brown paper bag. Personally I think you're over-extrapolating based on a limited sample of very visible, highly unpleasant people. Unpleasant people, IMO are evenly distributed between all social groups.

There have been a lot of layoffs in my rural region recently, and it's hit the locals hard. I'm hearing regular horror stories of people waiting months to get benefits. In most cases they get back pay from Centrelink- if they put the hours in shuffling back and forth 100km to the only regional Centrelink. 8-16 weeks seems to be the norm. This is, of course, time that would better be spent looking for work. Only if you're dead broke and can't pay the rent, and have Centrelink staff telling you this is the absolute last visit you'll need to make and your problem will be solved ( it never is )- guess what takes priority? People are told their problem will be solved, so they put the effort into what they are told is the final hurdle. Only it's a joke, it rarely is.

So next week, instead of approaching new opportunities with a clear head, they're in permanent trepidation about paying their rent, hoping Centrelink don't fuck up again, hoping their bank account is back paid for the last 3 months. Inbetween Centrelink harassment sessions they can put their heads over the parapet and seek new opportunities. If they haven't had their phone and internet cut off in the meantime

Is almost like Centrelink are prepared to fuck people around a lot so they don't take up benefits, and absorb the excess admin time they need to spend on appeals as a cost saving measure. All the work I've seen hard working locals put off by the timber industry and the university and the govt put in to getting on benefits they are well entitled to while they seek new work is a pathetic waste of time

This is encouraging rorts, not discourging them. Centrelink condition people at all levels to be wary of them, to not provide them with any information they can routinely fuck up and deny you income support, and by doing that the terms of such support start to get very rubbery indeed. And by not doing that, you're technically a criminal, and Tony Abbott gets to make up some more juicy headlines and whisper them into the echo chamber of the media

One local yesterday, laid off as a casual after a number of years at a local factory, and a hard working bloke of 50+ years who has never been unemployed, told me it took 10 weeks of intensive paperwork and hassle to get benefits. Can you live without income for 10 weeks? Could you do it if your employer suddenly changed the conditions of your employment without notice? He told me this fuckaround is standard and he's hearing it from former colleagues as well. I asked a bloke I know who works for one of the employment agencies about this and he shook his head and said " You won't believe the horror stories I hear, that's nothing, they're malevolent at Centrelink " and proceeded to tell me a few. They're routine, apparently, he hears 8-12 a day

Centrelink is a vicious circle. It is almost impossible to get onto benefits. It's not 'easy' money as some people say. And by the time you've spent a couple of hundred hours trying to work out what the fuck is acceptable to them and will keep them off your back so you can put your full attention to finding work, or caring for your disabled kid, or getting to the specialist or whatever.. feh, it's almost like you've done a full TAFE course. Most people would rather have put the hours into something actually productive.

That experiment where pigeons were given food only after pressing the feed button a random number of times springs to mind.

I wish I could be more succinct.

  5. Here's the mtr to google.com without VPN

    And SAB without VPN

Doesn't seem to me to be much difference? But you'd know better Sally

Thanks for your patience, I'm interested in the outcome one way or another, without prejudice, but even moreso I appreciate you taking the time to teach me this in case I ever need it again

  6. Damn, sorry to hear your back is snapped, I hope it heals fast and well for you

That was a bloody excellent rant- please don't apologise for it, and I agree with you except for a few points:

I don't believe our govt is interested in surveillance for the purpose of chasing up tax avoidance at all. If they were interested in tax avoidance, governments would be chasing up larger players who manage to minimise their tax liabilities. No govt can afford to do that

I agree that our govts aren't interested overly in the ethno community per se. Anything illicit that is raised for them is mostly by-catch

What govts are doing is gold plating surveillance capacity, just like has happened for the NSW grid electricity network. Throwing money at it now in the expectation that it will become more useful and user- friendly in the future. The waters were well and truly tested so the public are amenable to it, there haven't been any political repercussions from it, everyone just rolled over and went back to sleep after Snowden fell out of the headlines. Credible alternative network building/ opsec is either the preserve of cranks like us, or has been infiltrated, or both

I do believe much of this has been done out of ignorance and stupidity, because if you have some shiny gear and some well prepared presentations, it's easy to bamboozle some suit in an unrelated field and convince them that the end is nigh for their electorate unless they buy whatever it is you're selling. Large herds of these people congregate and pat each other on the back about how much safer they are now, completely ignorant of the wider issue. And amongst them are a few, malevolent, well placed dickheads who really believe this is for our own good/ national security/ isn't hurting anyone/ if you have nothing to hide etc

It's not what's happening online now that is of interest, by and large. Right now they're still stoked that the storage capacity is even there. It's getting us ready for total surveillance in 20 years. Is like when you break in a horse, you don't chuck a full bit in it's mouth and a heavy saddle and race it round the track. You get it used to the tack first, keep it light and once it's inured to the weight it's more amenable to instructions

Who knows what political directives will be governing surveillance in 20 years? Not me. I don't even have a conspiracy theory for this, I just think it's the inevitable result of a critical mass of stupid after it meets mass inertia and has shiny new toys to play with. The real evils are a way off yet, we may not even recognise the worst of them

Although it may just be enough that, in 20 years, there will be a full record of all someone's online stupidity, lolcat choices, 3am rants and pathetic attempts at adultery to make an individual tractable via the threat of public humiliation. Or unemployable. Or politically malleable. Who knows

I remember when Big Brother first emerged from the sludge and appeared on TV. I thought they were taking the piss, what with the name and everything. Then I realised it was a socially acceptable way of turning full scale personal surveillance into entertainment. Then it started making the news. We've gone slowly downhill since then wrt outrage at surveillance

If this turns into a conspiracy thread we can ask to have it binned into Bitches :)

I'll screenshot the mrt and put some up in a minute, you've got me interested too, and your instructions are easy to follow

  7. Today I found the hugest and most gorgeous bracket of Laetiporus portentosus ( White punk ) on a dead log that a recent flood had tossed halfway up a tree before the waters receded

The bracket weighs about 5kg and seems completely untouched by bugs. It also smells divine

Not a lot in the way of records re edibility, except mentioning Tasmanian Aborigines maybe used to eat it as an emergency food. A few sites say Laetiporus genus is edible... that seems to be a broad brush

Close relative of Chicken of the Woods. Anyone know if there are any toxic lookalikes I need to be wary of?

I pinged SAB twice b/c first time I got a 22% packet loss, I had it also for google the first time but deleted it. I'm on a 3G connection out in the back of nowhere

Ran the mtr command but couldn't find a way to get it to output to a logfile, data showed on terminal but just scrolled down the screen and wouldn't save.

Can you make anything of this Sally? Is not much understandable, but it looks like Auxin is right, the problem is within the page, maybe that icon loading thing, not at the server end

  9.

Darklight the basket is about 50 ltrs. The straw i buy it by the bale.

i chop it with a paper guillotine which takes about an hour. it is, a slow way of doing it.

Thank you! It looks so good, would love to see fruiting photos

I'mma try this when the weather warms up a bit. Power supply can be dodgy here so I won't rely on incubators for mass production any more

    Love your work

  10. Firefox on Mint. Last week or two.

Pages taking ages to load completely- in some case several minutes. Pages from other unrelated sites load much faster

Is the site hogging bandwidth for some extra reason? Or is it unreasonably slow?

I'm on a 3G connection, and it's normally slow. But for a week or so it's been super slow for SAB only

  11. I put some of the grain from a fresh ( surface sterilised pack opened in the flow hood ) Bunnings/ Mr Forthergills Pink Oyster packet onto some MEA agar + 8ml/L peroxide

All plates contaminated within 4 days with cobweb mould

None of the other plates and species from that same batch of agar contaminated at all, including some ex-field initiations from the paddock

Conclusive for me. I have all the kit. How they managed to fuck this one up is beyond me

  12. great time of the year here for outdoor grows. looking forward to a week

of 20 C average temps. so the timing for a blue oyster basket is looking

    Sweet as!

I've given up on incubators, these days I work with the seasons.

What volume is yr laundry basket? Did you make the straw bale yourself? Chop it up beforehand? Or buy it as-is from somewhere

  13. Tasmania- proposed legislative changes. Read 'em and weep

    http://www.bikeme.tv/index.php/wanna-protest-tasmania-dont/

Great article, expressly directed at motorcycle protests, but applies to everyone.

    Excerpt from the article:

Firstly, the laws apply to any protest action, in which the protester prevents access to, or obstructs, or hinders a business in any way, even if the protest action is on public land, like a footpath or roadway. The definition of ‘business’ is incredibly broad. A protester is anyone who is engaging or participating in protest activity in furtherance of, or raising awareness of, an ‘opinion, or belief, in respect of a political, environmental, social, cultural or economic issue’. Obviously the list of beliefs and opinions of which you can peacefully protest has been severely curtailed.

Why should motorcyclists care about this?

Most rallies or protest rides organised by and attended by motorcyclists consist of a ride to a location where speeches and other protesty things take place.

Under the proposed laws, if a convoy of motorcyclists, on their protest ride, hinder a taxi, delivery driver, truckie or some other such person lawfully going about their business activities, it will be an offence.

Now the law requires that the protester must know their actions will prevent access to, hinder or obstruct. However if just fifty motorcyclists form a convoy through a city, it would be hard to argue they did not know their actions may hinder or obstruct other people going about their business activities. Even more so if the action has been labelled a ‘block the bridge’ type event.

Understandably the taxi driver, delivery man or truckie might be annoyed and temporarily inconvenienced by your protest ride, but they do not have to suffer any economic loss for the laws to apply.

And now comes the reality check.

For a first offence, the police can give you an on-the-spot $2000 fine. They can also order that you do not return to the location within four days. If you do, it’s another fine. Or you can be arrested and charged and face court, in which case, the fine is a minimum of $5000. If found guilty, the conviction must be recorded.

For a second offence, you will go to jail. There is no other option. The judge must sentence you to a minimum of three months in jail, with a maximum of two years.

You may not be overly concerned at this point. You may be willing to cop a fine, even if it is grossly excessive, for the privilege of exercising your democratic right to peaceful protest.

But if the taxi driver and truck driver both report you at the same time, that constitutes two offences.

And you will go to jail.

BikeMe is great for staying up to date with legislative changes which potentially effect us *all*- motorcyclists, and people whom for some strange reason don't ride motorcycles at all.

The commentaries on the legislative changes are thorough, researched and IMO balanced.

  14.

    Also, mmm....morels.

Although if they're going to be shitty morels, then I take your point. If dole bludgers are raising children who degrade the overall standard of Australian Morchella species, then yeah, string the fuckers up!

    Love yer work :D

  15. I would agree with rigger's comments, there are people in Australia who are proud to be dole bluggers & genuinely think they are smarter than others who work hard to scrape by on a wage. The thing that scares me most about this is these people are having children & raising them to think this way & with the same shitty morels!

Geez, have you seen what's going on with ICAC lately? Ripoffs aren't just confined to the ranks of the poor. Some of our most wealthy have an overwhelming sense of entitlement and have no compunctions about using their advantage to the detriment of others

If you're only singing the song of the Murdoch press and kicking the poor, who, at an estimate are ripping off proportionally way less than the knaves of the wealthy elite ( who, remember, already have food/shelter/security )- then may I commend you to Gina Rinehart's $2 a day salary recommendation for her serfs toiling below ground

  16. You're channelling "A Current Affair" from 1996 as credible evidence of anything?

Have we been infiltrated by the Young Liberal Party or something?

You do know what this site is about, right? ;)

People are entitled to their subcultures as long as it doesn't cause trouble for others. I was served in a plumbing store by a man with a mohawk and piercings who may well ornament himself more and be a rocker on the weekend but not many restaurants would give him a job. That's his scene, I don't care. If I had another retail business I would be happy to employ an Indian woman in a sari or a Seikh man with his headdress, but where does one draw the line?. Many jobs require dress standards; clubs, schools and restaurants have them. Seikh men will not leave their homes without headdress and therefore are denied entry to RSL clubs, even if they served in wars for Britain. It's not discrimination.

The feds want this country to be multicultural but Western dress is still the norm. A man in a western suit but having face tattoos (ethnic or otherwise) will not apply for a job as a flight attendant. I'm not saying all punk rockers don't work. Some bikies have normal jobs but don't wear their 'colours' (badges) for obvious reasons. The local paper said there are 100 jobs in Rockhampton and employers told it that dress is their main consideration. Anyway, it's my experience in caravan parks that it's not attire or tattoos that's the main problem, it's the desire to work. There was a metal machinist in the news who is losing his job when Holden closes. Uprooting his family would be pretty bad, but single people should be encouraged to move. There are mine jobs in Western Oz and a mine machinery training company in Gladstone, Qld will train people who can't even ride a bicycle and get them jobs. I think they pay the cost and contract out the workers. Women are driving mine trucks in Central Qld and have special home-friendly 6 hour shifts. A few years in the Pilbara and a young couple could buy a home.

A current affairs show found jobs for some Melbourne siblings on a Qld resort island but they all refused to move. If they want social security they can go to college because the country's broke. A young man from Melbourne found out about it and got a job with no experience. Some employers have taken on work experience people and sacked them when the subsidies ended which probably didn't do their morale much good. Darklight is right though, there is a lot of ripping off going on. My doctor only gives me 2 repeat scripts so I have to see him more often than necessary. It's called overservicing. When I'm away from home other doctors give me 6. Sometimes I think the government does to too much for people. A plumber on wages told me that with the dole and family benefits he may as well not work. A young woman on TV said that with the cost of makeup and travel she was worse off financially than working.

It's good to get other people's opinions and if I'm wrong expect to be told. On a more positive note, migrants in general are very good workers and keen to get ahead. They contribute a lot to our wealth and many own small businesses and have a high degree of home ownership.

    Kent.

You're wrong, I'm prolly not the only person who will tell you that. I'm sure you won't find it terminally wounding or anything

  17. Wow- I hadn't seen this thread- nice one OP and thanks for the compost tumbler design, I'mma use that :)

Have had major probs with above ground worm farms being in the wrong spot and cooking it's denizens with sudden temp changes so I gave it a miss for a few years

I don't produce much kitchen waste and have a compost bin that tends to attract possums and other veggie garden enemies. So I got one of these while I'm in the learning phase:

    http://www.edencreekworms.com.au/products.html#wormtower

Yes it's a food grade pipe with a lid and holes in it, but there's like two hundred holes so it's still cheaper to buy it than DIY

Has been great learning opportunity to get me used to vermiculture- adding food to it every week has been an easy way to keep the worms breeding in the garden bed area, they move in and out depending on the weather and food. You can scrape the worm castings out every few months.

Apparently they are designed to be moved around, but I won't bother. Has been easier for me to keep it where it is and move the worms and the castings as required. I'd like another six, but they aren't a priority so I won't be going there for a while

It isn't big enough for all my food scraps, and some stuff shouldn't go in there so I'm eyeing off that tumbler design for sure

Best thing about the unit for me is temps are self regulating below ground, and the unit is really easy care

Garden soil in that bed area has gone from meh to pretty damn good within 6 months
